If your Sims 4 save has vanished from the game, the most common explanation is that The Sims 4 is reading a different Documents folder from the one you are checking, especially on Windows when OneDrive redirects or syncs Documents. Before you move anything, make a full copy of your Sims 4 folder. Then find the folder the game is actually using, search for the missing file, and only then decide whether it is truly gone.
Back up the Sims 4 folder before you change anything
Every troubleshooting step below involves moving, restoring, or renaming files, and any of those can make a problem worse if the only copy of your saves is disturbed. Electronic Arts’ help article on backing up and resetting The Sims 4 recommends copying the full player-managed Sims 4 folder before you reset or test files. Its guidance covers both Windows and Mac.

A separate copy can live on an external drive or USB stick. That is an optional convenience rather than a requirement, and it does not recover files that have already been deleted.
Find the save folder the game is actually reading
The Sims 4 stores player-managed data under a folder called Electronic Arts inside Documents, and saves sit in a saves subfolder within The Sims 4. On Windows, that gives the path Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > saves. If you have been looking in a folder called Documents and the save is not there, you may be looking in the wrong one.

- Close The Sims 4 completely. Do not move files while the game is running.
- Open File Explorer and go to Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > saves.
- If that folder is empty or missing, continue to the OneDrive check below.
When OneDrive redirects Documents
On Windows, OneDrive can be set up to back up or redirect the Documents folder. In that case, the Documents folder you see in File Explorer may be a copy under your OneDrive folder, and the game may read a different location than you expect. An EA Forums helper guide titled “Managing OneDrive” describes this as a common possibility on Windows, not a universal cause. Check the OneDrive Documents copy as well as the local one, and confirm which one contains your Electronic Arts folder.
Search for the missing save before assuming it was erased
If the expected saves folder is empty, search the whole computer for Sims 4 save files. An EA Forums support thread about disappearing saves and user content suggests this step and then opening the folder that contains any match. If you find the file somewhere else, that tells you where the game was writing or where a previous sync placed it.

If you use OneDrive, check two places there:
- The OneDrive Documents folder, for the
Electronic Artstree and any save files inside it. - The OneDrive recycle bin, which you can reach from the OneDrive website. Deleted items may still be recoverable there, but how long they are kept depends on your account type and Microsoft’s current policy, so check Microsoft’s documentation for the retention period that applies to you.
When you find a save, copy it into the saves folder the game reads. Keep the original where it was found until you have confirmed the game can load it.
Check the file name and the folder it sits in
A save can be present on disk and still fail to appear in the game. An EA Forums answer about missing game saves gives Slot_0000000x.save as the expected filename pattern, and warns that extra duplicate suffixes can stop the game from recognizing a file. If you have a copy named something like a double-copy suffix, it may be the reason the save is not listed.

- Confirm the file sits directly inside
saves, not in a nested subfolder. - Compare the name with the
Slot_0000000x.savepattern and remove any duplicate suffix only from a copy, never from your only version. - Renaming is not a repair. If a save is corrupt or incomplete, a correct name will not fix it.
Restore and test carefully
If several backup saves exist, EA’s guidance describes restoring a backup and testing save files one at a time to find a problem file. Put one copy in the active folder, launch the game, and check whether it loads. Keep the untouched backup throughout, so that a failed test never removes a working file.
What to do depending on where the file turns up
The location where you find the save points to the likely next step. These are starting points, not a diagnosis, because they depend on what your computer and cloud storage actually contain.

Mac and other platforms
The OneDrive steps above apply to Windows, where Documents redirection is the documented cause. Do not apply them unchanged to a Mac or to iCloud. The sources reviewed did not establish a complete, current workflow for Mac or iCloud, so for Mac, follow EA’s help article on backing up and resetting The Sims 4, which covers the Mac folder for copying and resetting. That article does not on its own resolve every platform-specific missing-save case.
What cannot be promised
There is no reliable way to guarantee recovery of a save after it has been permanently deleted or after the file has been damaged. The steps above improve your chances by finding where the file lives and by keeping every copy intact while you test. If a save has been permanently deleted, the most useful thing you can do is check for an existing backup copy and avoid overwriting anything while you search.
