If The Sims 4 stopped launching, started crashing, or developed broken gameplay after an update, there may not be one universal cause. A patch can expose an outdated mod or custom-content conflict, but the game, EA app, a save, or downloaded content can also be involved. Start by identifying the symptom, then test one category at a time—and protect your saves before changing game files.
First, identify what is failing
Note whether The Sims 4 will not launch, crashes during loading, freezes, cannot load a particular save, or runs with broken in-game behavior. Also record your platform, installed game version, whether you use mods or custom content, and whether the EA app reports a download or update error. EA says the installed version appears in the lower-left corner of the main menu, if you can open it. EA’s guide to mods, updates, and error codes explains where to find it.

Check whether your installed version matches the latest notes
Use the official patch notes for your platform and compare their version number with the one installed. The September 22, 2026 update, “Sul Sul, Smarter Sims!”, lists PC version 1.128.90.1030, Mac version 1.128.90.1230, and console version 2.39. EA described quality-of-life and autonomy changes, stability and crash work, and a Mac rendering crash fix. The notes also say an outdated mod-file conflict was behind the top automated crash report EA investigated; that is a reason to check mods, not proof that every player’s issue has the same cause. EA’s September 15, 2026 Laundry List preview said an October base-game update would focus on food, dining, and drink. A preview is not confirmation that the update shipped, nor a complete list of fixes. Check EA’s dated notes for the actual release relevant to your platform rather than assuming that update is installed. Read the September 15 Laundry List.

Test the game with mods disabled
Mods and custom content are an important first diagnostic because a mod that worked before a patch may stop being compatible afterward. EA says it does not screen, endorse, or support specific mods, so check the creator’s own current compatibility notes rather than assuming a mod is safe because it previously worked.
- Disable mods and custom content using EA’s instructions for your setup.
- Launch the game, load a save, and try Live Mode long enough to see whether the original problem returns.
- If the game works normally without mods, check creators’ update information. Remove or update incompatible items.
- Add items back in small batches, testing after each batch and keeping track of what you restored. If the problem returns, narrow down that batch and remove or update the item causing it.
When ending the mod-disabled test, exit without saving if content is missing. EA warns that saving before content is re-enabled can remove that content from the save. Follow EA’s post-update mod procedure for the disable and restore steps.

Repair the game if it will not load
If the game fails to load through the EA app, try its built-in Repair option before more disruptive changes:
- Open the EA app and select Library.
- Open the menu for The Sims 4 and choose Repair.
- Let the repair finish, then try launching the game again.
If the EA app itself has a download or update problem, EA separately recommends clearing its cache through App Recovery. Cache clearing may help with app or download issues; it is not a general fix for an in-game bug. See EA’s EA app download, installation, and loading guide.

Use a backed-up user-folder reset to isolate save or content problems
If the issue remains, resetting The Sims 4 user folder can help distinguish trouble in existing saves or downloaded Gallery content from a broader game or system problem. This is a diagnostic step, not a reason to discard your files:
- Follow EA’s platform-specific instructions to back up the Sims 4 folder and reset it. Do not guess at folder paths; they differ by platform.
- Restart the game and test it with the reset folder.
- If it runs normally, EA says the problem lies in the prior saves or downloaded Gallery content. Keep your backup and restore files carefully to identify the specific source.
- If it still fails, the old user files were not the cause; continue with platform-specific troubleshooting.
Use EA’s backup and reset guide for the correct paths and restore procedure.

For crashes or freezes, use steps for your platform
Closing background applications is a general step in EA’s cross-platform crash guidance. Other options differ by system: EA lists clean boot, repairing or reinstalling game files, and limiting frame rate or using V-Sync among PC steps. PlayStation and Xbox have separate guidance, so do not apply PC-only instructions to a console. Follow EA’s crash and freeze troubleshooting for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox and use only the steps for your platform.

What your test results tell you
- Works with mods disabled: investigate mod or custom-content compatibility and restore items in tracked batches.
- Works after a user-folder reset: the prior saves or downloaded Gallery content are implicated; use the backup to isolate them.
- Repair resolves a loading failure: the problem was addressable through the EA app’s game-file repair.
- Still fails after these checks: compare your platform and version with current EA notes and follow the relevant platform-specific crash guidance. A patch note describing a fix or crash cause does not by itself establish what is affecting your installation.
