Volo usually joins your camp after you free him from the Goblin Camp in Act One and tell him to meet you there. If he was already at camp and has vanished, he may have left because of later story events. Check your quest state and story progress before assuming the game has bugged.
Why isn’t Volo at my camp?
In Baldur’s Gate 3, Volo’s usual route to camp begins with rescuing him at the Goblin Camp. The Rescue Volo quest reference describes his captivity and the outcome in which he returns to camp.
Which explanation fits depends on what has happened in your save:
- You have not freed him from the Goblin Camp yet.
- You freed him, but the quest or return-to-camp outcome may not have been recorded.
- He joined earlier and later left because of story progression.
- You may have encountered a reported Gribbo-related edge case.
Check whether you completed the Goblin Camp rescue
Volo is held at the Goblin Camp in Act One. Review your journal for the rescue quest, then return to camp and check whether the outcome of telling him to meet you there was recorded. The quest reference and camp-follower reference support this as the standard route.

If the journal indicates a successful rescue but Volo is still missing, the available references do not establish a universal fix. They also do not identify a dependable platform-specific solution, so avoid treating any single reload or camp action as guaranteed.
Did Volo leave after joining?
Volo can leave camp after performing his optional surgery, or when the party reaches Rivington. The camp-follower reference says he may return after the party rescues him in the Lower City. If you are at that stage, check for the Lower City rescue rather than repeating the Act One steps.

Could the Gribbo exception explain it?
The quest reference reports an edge case: if Gribbo is killed before you reach the Goblin Camp, the rescue quest may not trigger, but Volo may still appear at camp after a long rest. This is a reported possibility, not a guaranteed outcome or a general fix for a missing Volo.
Is Volo’s surgery required for him to join?
No. Surgery is a separate optional scene, not a requirement for Volo to become a camp follower. The Ersatz Eye item reference says you must first rescue Volo and tell him to find you at camp before he can attempt the operation. The attempt does not remove the tadpole and results in the Ersatz Eye.

The item’s associated See Invisibility passive can detect invisible creatures within 9 metres (30 feet); those creatures must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or lose invisibility, according to the passive-feature reference. That reward is separate from whether Volo is currently at camp.

- Check whether you freed Volo at the Goblin Camp in Act One.
- Review the journal and return to camp to confirm whether the rescue outcome was recorded.
- If he had already joined, consider whether you performed the surgery or reached Rivington.
- If the party is in the Lower City, look for the rescue that can bring him back.
- If Gribbo was killed before you reached the Goblin Camp, a long rest may be relevant to the reported edge case, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
These behaviors are described in community-maintained BG3 Wiki references; they do not establish which patch, platform, or save-specific circumstances apply to every player.
