Why Is My Steam Guard Not Enabled? Email Protection, Mobile Authenticator and Trade Holds Explained

By VGSources Team 7 min read

If Steam says “Steam Guard is not enabled,” first check which protection it means. Steam Guard is the overall security system, while Email Steam Guard and the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator are different methods. Your email protection can be working while trading or Community Market activity still requires the Mobile Authenticator.

The message usually points to an unverified email, disabled Steam Guard, an authenticator that was never completed, a recent phone or authenticator change, or a missing settings control after account recovery.

What “Steam Guard not enabled” actually means

Steam Guard is Steam’s account-security feature. It can protect sign-ins with codes sent to your verified email address or with codes and confirmations from the Steam Mobile app.

Protection Where codes appear Main purpose What it may not satisfy
Email Steam Guard Your verified email inbox Verifying sign-ins from unfamiliar devices Some trading and Community Market Mobile Authenticator requirements
Mobile Authenticator The Steam Mobile app Login codes, trade confirmations and stronger account protection It does not instantly remove existing trade or Market holds

Therefore, installing the Steam app or receiving email login codes does not necessarily mean that the Mobile Authenticator is active. A third-party trading site may also use “Steam Guard enabled” as shorthand for mobile-authenticator eligibility. Check that service’s exact rule instead of assuming its message describes every Steam security setting.

Check your Steam Guard status

  1. Open the Steam client and sign in to the correct account.
  2. Choose Steam → Settings.
  3. Open Security.
  4. Select Manage Steam Guard, or the equivalent Steam Guard management control.

Steam’s labels can vary slightly between client versions and operating systems. Look for the screen that manages email codes and the Mobile Authenticator.

If Steam offers Get Steam Guard codes by email, email protection may be disabled or not fully configured. If it shows Mobile Authenticator controls, inspect whether the authenticator is linked to this account and device.

Fix email Steam Guard

Email Steam Guard requires a verified contact email and access to the inbox for the account you are using. Steam says email protection is enabled by default after the email is verified and Steam has been restarted twice on the computer. If it was manually disabled, re-enable it from the Steam Guard management screen.

If your email address is not verified

  1. Open your Steam account settings and check the contact email.
  2. Confirm that it belongs to the account currently signed in.
  3. Request Steam’s verification message.
  4. Open the message and complete verification.
  5. Restart Steam as requested by the client.

If the email code does not arrive

  • Check the correct inbox, including spam and junk folders.
  • Add [email protected] and [email protected] to your trusted senders.
  • Request a new code and use the newest message. Older codes may stop working.
  • Wait before making repeated requests.
  • Steam advises contacting Support if the verification email has not arrived after three hours.

These steps address email-based protection only. They will not activate the Mobile Authenticator for trade confirmations.

Enable the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator

For trading and Community Market activity, the Mobile Authenticator is usually the relevant protection. Use Steam’s official Mobile Authenticator setup instructions.

  1. Install the official Steam Mobile app from your device’s normal app store.
  2. Sign in to the same Steam account as the one in the desktop client.
  3. Open Steam Guard in the app.
  4. Follow the prompts to add or enable the authenticator.
  5. Confirm a phone number by SMS if Steam requests it.
  6. Save the recovery code somewhere secure.
  7. Confirm that the app displays a current Steam Guard code and that trade-confirmation prompts appear when relevant.

Installing the app alone does not enable the authenticator. The in-app setup must be completed. Steam’s setup guidance also says a phone number is not always required for every setup path, so do not treat a phone number as a universal prerequisite. Steam may still require SMS confirmation for particular setup or recovery steps.

Codes are rejected or keep changing

  • The Mobile Authenticator generates a new code every 30 seconds. Use the currently displayed code, not one that has just expired.
  • Enable automatic date and time on the phone. Steam says the phone’s time must be correct for generated codes to work.
  • Check that the app is linked to the correct Steam account.
  • Wait for the next code rather than repeatedly submitting an expiring one.

The app’s time-based code does not require the phone to be online after it has been generated, although internet or SMS access may be needed for setup, recovery or confirmations.

Why trading or the Community Market is still blocked

An authenticator can be working correctly while Steam continues to restrict activity. Steam says trades or Market listings made before the Mobile Authenticator was added, or during its first seven days, may be held for up to 15 days. Activity made more than seven days after the authenticator was added is not subject to that particular hold.

  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts

Adding the authenticator does not shorten holds that already exist. Do not remove and re-add it to try to reset the timer; that can create another security cooldown.

These time periods are different situations:

  • Seven-day condition: the authenticator must have protected the account for at least seven days to avoid the relevant hold on newer activity.
  • Up-to-15-day item hold: a trade or listing made before that condition was met may remain held.
  • Recovery or removal restriction: removing an inaccessible authenticator can produce a separate 15-day trading or Market restriction.
  • Transfer restriction: moving the authenticator to another device can have a shorter two-day restriction in the circumstances described by Steam.

See Steam’s trade and Community Market guidance for the applicable hold rules.

The Steam Guard button is missing

Steam specifically documents a case in which the client reports that Steam Guard is not enabled but the button is missing after Steam Support restores an account. The first fix is to fully restart Steam.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use Steam’s exit or quit command so the client closes completely.
  2. Reopen Steam and sign in again.
  3. Return to Steam → Settings → Security.
  4. Check the Steam Guard management screen.

Simply closing the window may leave Steam running in the background. If the control is still missing, confirm that you recovered the intended account, check Account Details and Security, and contact Steam through help.steampowered.com. An unexpected restoration or security change may indicate that the account was compromised.

Phone-number and SMS problems

When Steam requests a phone number or SMS confirmation, work through these checks:

  1. Enter the number in international format, beginning with + and the country code.
  2. Verify that the selected country code matches the number’s country.
  3. Use a number that can receive SMS. Steam may reject some VoIP numbers.
  4. Check that the phone inbox is not full.
  5. Ask the carrier whether short codes or messages from six-digit senders are blocked.
  6. If repeated requests stop producing messages, wait several minutes to an hour before trying again.
  7. Check whether Telegram is available as an alternative delivery method in your country when Steam offers it.

Steam’s Mobile Authenticator FAQ covers these delivery limitations. Do not buy a paid SMS number or use a third-party “verification” service as a workaround.

Lost phone, new phone or changed number

Choose the recovery method based on what happened:

  • Old phone still available: transfer the authenticator to the replacement device when Steam provides that option.
  • Old phone unavailable: use Steam’s account-recovery flow or recover through the phone number associated with the account where Steam permits it.
  • Authenticator must be removed: understand that removal or recovery can cause a 15-day inability to trade or use the Community Market.

Transfer, removal and new setup are not interchangeable. Steam describes a two-day restriction for an authenticator transfer in the relevant circumstances, while removing an authenticator can result in a 15-day restriction. Existing holds can remain even after a replacement authenticator is active.

Save recovery codes before you need them

Steam provides backup codes for account recovery. From the desktop client:

In the Steam Mobile app, open the Steam Guard page and use the gear icon to find the recovery-code option. Store the codes securely and separately from your computer. Steam recommends printing them rather than leaving screenshots or unprotected copies on the device.

When to contact Steam Support

Use Steam Support when:

  • You cannot access the verified email address.
  • A valid phone number is repeatedly rejected.
  • The authenticator remains tied to an old or inaccessible device.
  • The Steam Guard control is still missing after a full client restart.
  • You suspect someone changed the account’s security settings.
  • Steam’s own status conflicts with a message from a trading or Market-related website.

Use only the official help.steampowered.com domain. Steam Guard cannot be legitimately “unlocked” by a skin-trading site, administrator, or paid recovery service.

Protect the account while troubleshooting

Steam Guard adds protection, but it cannot compensate for a compromised email account, phishing, malware on an authorized computer, or stolen credentials. Never give another person your password, login code, recovery code or Steam Guard files—even if they claim to be Steam staff or a trade-site administrator. Steam’s account-security guidance explains these risks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a website asks you to sign in to “verify” a trade or remove a Steam Guard restriction, stop and navigate to Steam Support yourself. There is no legitimate third-party replacement for Steam Guard or the Mobile Authenticator.
