If your Xbox controller is not showing up in your PC’s Bluetooth list, check compatibility first, then pairing mode and Windows discovery. Current Xbox Wireless Controllers and Bluetooth-equipped Xbox One models can pair with compatible Windows PCs; Xbox 360 Wireless Controllers cannot be treated as ordinary Bluetooth devices.
If your Xbox controller is not appearing in your PC’s Bluetooth list, check these five points in order: the controller supports Bluetooth, it is actually in pairing mode, Bluetooth is available and enabled on the PC, Windows is scanning for all device types, and the Bluetooth drivers or radio are working correctly.
The most common mistake is assuming that every Xbox controller is a Bluetooth device. Current Xbox Wireless Controllers, the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, and later Bluetooth-equipped Xbox One controllers can connect to compatible Windows PCs. An Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, however, does not pair through ordinary Windows Bluetooth and needs its proper wireless receiver or a wired connection.

First, identify your Xbox controller
Before changing Windows settings, determine which controller you have. “Xbox controller” covers several generations with different wireless technologies.
| Controller | Can it appear in PC Bluetooth? | Correct PC connection options |
|---|---|---|
| Current Xbox Wireless Controller | Yes, when the model and PC support Bluetooth | Bluetooth, a compatible USB-C data cable, or the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows |
| Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 | Yes | Bluetooth, a compatible USB cable, or the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows |
| Later Xbox One controller with Bluetooth | Yes | Bluetooth, USB, or the Xbox Wireless Adapter, depending on the model |
| Xbox 360 Wireless Controller | No—not as a normal Bluetooth device | Its compatible Xbox 360 wireless receiver or a wired connection |
| Third-party “Designed for Xbox” controller | Only if that specific model documents Bluetooth support | Follow the manufacturer’s connection instructions |
Microsoft introduced Bluetooth support with the newer Xbox One S controller generation, which is why some Xbox One controllers work wirelessly with Windows while older ones do not. Do not use the Xbox 360 pairing procedure as though it were Bluetooth pairing.

1. Check whether your PC has Bluetooth
On Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices. You should see a Bluetooth switch and Bluetooth-related device settings.
If Bluetooth is missing entirely:
- Check the PC or motherboard specifications to confirm that Bluetooth hardware is included.
- On a laptop, check for a physical wireless switch or function-key toggle.
- Turn off Airplane mode.
- Open Device Manager and look for a Bluetooth category or a Bluetooth radio.
- Look for a disabled adapter or an unknown device with a warning icon.
If Bluetooth is absent from both Settings and Device Manager, the controller probably is not the immediate problem. The PC may lack Bluetooth hardware, the adapter may be disabled, or its driver may be missing or damaged. Desktop users can add Bluetooth with a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter, but check its Windows compatibility and install instructions rather than assuming every dongle will work automatically.

2. Put the controller into Bluetooth pairing mode
Turning on the controller is not the same as making it discoverable. To pair over Bluetooth:
- Turn on the controller by pressing the Xbox button.
- Press and hold the controller’s dedicated pairing button until the Xbox button begins flashing.
- On the PC, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Add device > Bluetooth.
- Wait for the controller to appear, select it, and complete pairing.
The flashing Xbox button is the important visual check. If it does not flash, the controller may be powered on but connected to another device or not in Bluetooth discovery mode. Turn it off and back on, press the pairing button again, move it close to the PC, and retry.
Also check the controller’s batteries or charge level. Microsoft’s Bluetooth guidance recommends making sure a wireless device is powered, charged or supplied with fresh batteries, and within range while pairing.
3. Change Bluetooth discovery to Advanced in Windows 11
Windows 11’s default discovery setting may not display every type of Bluetooth device. This can produce the exact symptom where the controller is in pairing mode but never appears in the list.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Devices.
- Find Bluetooth devices discovery.
- Change it from Default to Advanced.
- Return to Bluetooth & devices, choose Add device > Bluetooth, and scan again.
Keep the controller in pairing mode while scanning. The Xbox button should continue flashing until Windows discovers or times out on the connection.
4. Remove an old pairing and start over
If the controller appears under previously connected devices but will not reconnect, remove the saved entry rather than repeatedly selecting it.

- INSTANT BLUETOOTH ACCESS: Bluetooth dongle adapter receiver for PCs converts non-Bluetooth devices into Bluetooth-capable with simple USB connection
- WIDE COMPATIBILITY: Supports Bluetooth 5.4 and is backwards compatible with Bluetooth 5.3/5.2/5.1/5.0/V4.2/4.0/3.0/2.1/2.0/1.1; ONLY works with Windows 8.1, 10, and 11
- MULTI-DEVICE CONNECTION: Connect up to 6 devices simultaneously; Not compatible with all other operation systems e.g. Mac, Linux, Chrome, Unix, Playstation(PS), Windows 7 and below; Nano bluetooth receiver can be plugged in via any standard USB port
- ENHANCED PERFORMANCE: EDR and BLE technology offers enhanced data rate/transfer speed and low energy consumption
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Not compatible with all other operation systems e.g. Mac, Linux, Chrome, Unix, Playstation(PS), Windows 7 and below; Disable any built-in Bluetooth of the device before use this product, refer to the user manual for detail
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Find the Xbox controller under your devices.
- Select the three-dot menu next to it and choose Remove device.
- Turn Bluetooth off, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on.
- Put the controller back into pairing mode.
- Select Add device > Bluetooth and pair it again.
A saved pairing can become unusable after a Windows update or a change in the controller’s connections. It is also possible that the controller is still trying to reconnect to an Xbox, phone, tablet, or another PC. Removing the Windows entry and pairing again clears the PC’s side of the connection.
5. Run Windows’ Bluetooth troubleshooter
On Windows 11, open the Get Help app and start the automated Bluetooth troubleshooter. It can check common Bluetooth configuration problems and attempt repairs.
Recommended Free Tools
Run it after confirming that the controller is compatible and in pairing mode. A troubleshooter cannot make an Xbox 360 Wireless Controller appear as a Bluetooth device, and it cannot add Bluetooth hardware to a PC that does not have it.
6. Update or reinstall the PC’s Bluetooth driver
A missing, outdated, or incompatible Bluetooth driver can prevent discovery. This is especially plausible after a Windows upgrade or major system update.
- Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
- Expand Bluetooth.
- Right-click the Bluetooth adapter or Bluetooth radio.
- Select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart the PC if Windows asks you to.
If Windows says the best driver is already installed but Bluetooth still does not work, visit the support page for your PC, motherboard, or wireless-adapter manufacturer and download the driver for your exact model and Windows version. Prefer the manufacturer’s official driver over random third-party driver-download sites.
If that official path does not resolve a missing or incompatible Bluetooth driver, Outbyte Driver Updater is an optional way to review available Windows hardware-driver updates; use the PC manufacturer’s package when it is available.
If the adapter appears in Device Manager with an error, you can also right-click it, choose Uninstall device, restart Windows, and allow Windows to reinstall it. If the manufacturer provides a specific installation package, use that package when Windows does not restore the adapter correctly.
7. Test for interference and power-management problems
Interference is less likely when the controller never appears at all, but it becomes more relevant if the controller connects and then disconnects or works only intermittently.
- Move the controller closer to the PC while testing.
- Move a Bluetooth USB dongle away from crowded USB ports.
- Keep unshielded USB 3.0 devices, hubs, and storage drives away from the Bluetooth adapter when possible.
- Temporarily disconnect other wireless accessories to simplify the test.
- Turn off Battery Saver or Energy Saver while troubleshooting.
For repeated disconnections, open Device Manager > Bluetooth, open the adapter’s Properties, and check the Power Management tab. If present, clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. The exact tabs can vary by adapter and driver, so do not assume the option will be available.

- Plug and Play: The Bluetooth adapter is developed for Windows systems only and does not support other systems. No driver installation is required under Windows 11/10/8.1. NOTE: Win 7, Linux and MacOS System are NOT supported.
- Mini Size: An extremely compact Bluetooth stick that you can leave on your laptop or PC without removing it.The compact size does not interfere with other USB ports. Convenient to carry, no space occupation.
- What Can I do if the Bluetooth adapter can not work?: Ensure there are no other Bluetooth devices installed on the computer. If there are, disable all existing Bluetooth devices in "Device Manager", then insert the adapter and try again. (For detailed information please read the user manual)
Restarting the Bluetooth Support Service can also help with a Bluetooth subsystem that has stopped responding. Press Win + R, enter services.msc, find Bluetooth Support Service, right-click it, and choose Restart. This is more useful for an adapter that is present but behaving inconsistently than for an unsupported controller.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute8. Try a wired USB connection
Connect the controller directly to the PC with a compatible USB-C cable, if the controller uses USB-C. The cable must support data; a charge-only cable may power the controller without allowing Windows to communicate with it.
A wired test separates several possible causes:
- It works over USB: the controller is probably functional, and the problem is more likely the Bluetooth path, compatibility, pairing state, or PC adapter.
- It does not work over USB: try another known-good data cable and another USB port. If it still fails, the controller or PC USB connection may have a hardware or driver problem.
- It works only with one cable: the original cable may have been charge-only or faulty.
A USB-C data cable for Xbox controller can be a practical fallback or diagnostic tool, but verify that it supports data transfer. A compatible cable is also needed for certain Xbox Accessories app functions on Windows, including controller button-mapping features.
9. Use the Xbox Wireless Adapter if Bluetooth is unavailable or unreliable
If your PC lacks Bluetooth—or its Bluetooth connection remains unreliable—the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows bypasses the PC’s ordinary Bluetooth pairing path. It is a USB device designed to pair compatible Xbox Wireless Controllers with Windows using Xbox Wireless technology.
This is not the same thing as a generic Bluetooth dongle. After plugging it in, you should not expect the Xbox Wireless Adapter to appear as a generic Bluetooth device in Windows. Pair the adapter and controller using their respective pairing buttons, following the adapter’s instructions.

The adapter is particularly useful for a desktop without built-in Bluetooth, or when the controller works over USB but the computer’s Bluetooth radio cannot discover it. Confirm that your specific controller and Windows setup are supported before buying one.
Windows 10: an important support distinction
The Bluetooth menus are similar on Windows 10, but Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. The troubleshooting steps may still apply to an existing Windows 10 installation, but Windows 11 is the current supported target as of 2026. Driver availability and manufacturer support may therefore be better on Windows 11.
On Windows 10, start with Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices, turn Bluetooth on, select Add Bluetooth or other device, and choose Bluetooth. If the option is missing, investigate the PC’s hardware and Bluetooth driver before troubleshooting the controller.
What the result tells you
| Test result | Most likely conclusion | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| An Xbox 360 controller never appears in Bluetooth | Expected behavior for that wireless generation | Use its compatible receiver or a wired connection |
| The Xbox button is not flashing | The controller is not in Bluetooth discovery mode | Turn it off, check power, and hold the pairing button |
| Bluetooth is absent from Windows | Missing, disabled, or faulty PC hardware/driver | Check Device Manager, the manufacturer driver, or add compatible hardware |
| The controller appears but will not reconnect | Stale pairing or Windows Bluetooth state | Remove the device, toggle Bluetooth, and pair again |
| It works over USB but not Bluetooth | Bluetooth compatibility, radio, driver, or controller wireless-path issue | Update the PC driver, test interference, or use the Xbox Wireless Adapter |
| It connects and repeatedly disconnects | Interference, power management, driver, range, or hardware problem | Reduce interference, check power settings, update drivers, and test wired operation |
When replacement is justified
Do not replace the controller as the first response. Replacement becomes more reasonable only after you have confirmed that:

Such as Bluetooth speakers, keyboards, headsets, mice, and Bluetooth printers, etc. Only supports Windows 11/10/8.1, Not compatible with Mac OS, Linux, car stereo systems,XBOX,ps4 or TVs.
- the controller generation supports the connection method;
- another Bluetooth device can be discovered by the PC, or the PC’s Bluetooth hardware has been verified;
- the controller enters pairing mode and has adequate power;
- Windows discovery, pairing removal, troubleshooting, and driver steps have been completed; and
- a known-good data cable or a different supported wireless path has been tested.
If the controller works on an Xbox but not on any compatible PC, the issue may still be its Bluetooth function rather than the entire controller. Conversely, if multiple Bluetooth devices fail on the same PC, suspect the PC adapter, driver, interference, or Windows installation before buying another controller. A current Xbox Wireless Controller is a sensible replacement only when the existing controller is unsupported, damaged, or confirmed to have failed—not simply because the first pairing attempt did not work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Xbox 360 controller not show up in Bluetooth?
No. Xbox 360 Wireless Controllers use Xbox 360 wireless technology and should not be expected to appear as ordinary Bluetooth devices. Use the appropriate Xbox 360 wireless receiver or a wired connection. Newer Xbox One S-generation controllers and current Xbox Wireless Controllers are different and may support Bluetooth.
Why does my controller work on Xbox but not on PC?
Not necessarily. If an Xbox controller works on an Xbox, that proves it can communicate with that console, but it does not prove that the controller supports Bluetooth or that its Bluetooth function is working. Confirm the controller generation, then test pairing and a compatible USB data connection.
What should I do if Windows cannot find my Xbox controller?
Use Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices, change Bluetooth devices discovery from Default to Advanced, then select Add device > Bluetooth while the controller’s Xbox button is flashing. This makes Windows scan for more Bluetooth device types.

Remove the controller from Settings > Bluetooth & devices, turn Bluetooth off and back on, restart the controller, put it into pairing mode, and add it again. Also check that it is not trying to reconnect to an Xbox, phone, tablet, or another PC.
What if my PC has no Bluetooth option?
If Bluetooth is missing from Settings and Device Manager, check whether the PC includes Bluetooth, whether the adapter is disabled, and whether its manufacturer driver is installed. A desktop may need a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter or an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows.
Can I use a USB cable instead of Bluetooth?
Use a compatible USB-C cable that supports data, not only charging. If the controller works over USB, the controller is at least communicating with the PC and the fault is more likely in Bluetooth pairing, the PC radio, its driver, or compatibility.
Is the Xbox Wireless Adapter the same as a Bluetooth dongle?
The Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows uses Xbox Wireless technology, not generic Bluetooth. It is a fallback for compatible Xbox controllers when a PC lacks Bluetooth or its Bluetooth connection is unreliable.
