Black Ops 6 Season 02 launched on January 28, 2025, with officially acknowledged stability problems and broader player-reported PC crashes, including blue screens of death. Activision confirmed frequent launch stability issues on The Tomb for AMD GPU users and later listed multiple crash fixes. It did not, however, confirm that Ricochet or the Season 02 update caused all reported kernel-level Windows crashes.

Black Ops 6 Season 02 launched on January 28, 2025, alongside official stability problems and a wider wave of player-reported PC crashes—including full Windows blue screens of death (BSODs). Activision officially documented frequent launch stability issues on The Tomb for some AMD GPU users and later listed additional fixes. However, the broader BSOD reports came from independent reporting and players; Activision did not confirm that the Season 02 update or Ricochet definitively caused kernel-level Windows crashes.

The distinction matters. A normal game crash returns you to the desktop or launcher. A BSOD means Windows has stopped because of a serious driver, hardware, or software-level fault. Reports during the Season 02 launch described both kinds of failures across Multiplayer, Zombies, Warzone, the benchmark, the firing range, and even the Call of Duty launcher.

What happened when Black Ops 6 Season 02 launched?

Season 02 arrived around January 28, 2025, after Activision published its launch patch notes on January 27. The update added new maps, modes, rewards, gameplay changes, quality-of-life features, and bug fixes. Activision also discussed backend stability improvements for Call of Duty and Warzone, but those comments referred to online or server stability—not Windows blue screens.

The official launch notes did acknowledge a stability problem: frequent issues on The Tomb affecting players with AMD GPUs. The same notes listed “various stability fixes.” That is the clearest official confirmation that Season 02 had launch-period stability defects, but it does not prove that every PC crash—or every BSOD—had the same cause.

What PC players reported

Independent reporting collected accounts of Black Ops 6 users experiencing complete BSODs rather than ordinary application crashes. The affected game activities reportedly included:

  • Multiplayer matches
  • Zombies
  • Warzone
  • The in-game benchmark
  • The firing range
  • The Call of Duty launcher

The reports were not limited to one graphics manufacturer. Systems using AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel Arc graphics were represented in the independent accounts, so the officially documented AMD issue on The Tomb should not be treated as an explanation for every reported blue screen.

At least one reported failure displayed the Windows stop code UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP. The timing led some players and commentators to suspect a connection with the major Season 02 update and a Ricochet kernel-level anti-cheat update. That remains an unconfirmed hypothesis, not an established cause. The available official documentation does not prove that Ricochet caused the BSODs, nor does it establish that the Season 02 patch directly damaged Windows or hardware.

What Activision officially acknowledged and fixed

Activision’s official records describe several separate crash and stability categories during Season 02:

Issue or area What the official record supports
The Tomb with AMD GPUs Frequent launch stability issues were officially documented.
AMD Radeon RX 400 and RX 500 cards The Known Issues record says related crashes were addressed.
AMD crashes in Zombies The Known Issues record says these crashes were addressed.
Zombies pausing A later Season 02 Reloaded update included a fix for a pause-related crash.
Other stability problems Later patch notes listed additional stability work and miscellaneous fixes.

These updates show that stability remained an active maintenance issue and that several crash categories were later addressed. They do not demonstrate that one patch fixed every Season 02 BSOD report. Activision’s Known Issues page is a changing tracker, so players should check the current version rather than rely only on the historical Season 02 entries.

What to do if Black Ops 6 is crashing or blue-screening

Use the least invasive steps first. A BSOD can be caused by Windows, a graphics or chipset driver, unstable hardware settings, conflicting software, or the game itself. Do not assume that reinstalling Black Ops 6 alone will repair a Windows-level fault.

1. Record the stop code and when the failure occurs

Write down the exact BSOD message, such as UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP, and note whether it happens during launch, shader preparation, a particular map, Zombies, Warzone, the benchmark, or while using another program. Also record your Windows edition, GPU model, driver version, storefront, and whether any overclock or tuning profile is active.

This information helps distinguish a repeatable game-specific crash from a wider system problem. If Windows restarts too quickly to show the message, check Windows’ reliability or event history after rebooting and look for the associated stop-code information.

2. Install current Windows updates

Activision recommends keeping Windows 10 or Windows 11 current. Its PC troubleshooting guidance also notes that the latest Windows 11 version improves NVIDIA stability. Apply pending updates, restart the computer, and test again before changing security settings or performing more invasive repairs.

Microsoft’s general BSOD guidance likewise recommends Windows updates, checking Device Manager, using Safe Mode when necessary, and considering system recovery options if stop-code errors continue outside the game.

  • NVIDIA: 566.03
  • AMD: 25.5.1
  • Intel: 32.0.101.6790

These version numbers are time-specific recommendations, not a permanent guarantee that they remain the newest or best-supported releases. Check Activision’s current PC troubleshooting guidance and your GPU manufacturer’s current release notes before installing a driver. If the BSOD began immediately after a driver update, a clean driver installation or a supported rollback may be appropriate; avoid downloading driver files or DLLs from unofficial sites.

4. Let shader preloading finish

Allow Black Ops 6 to complete shader preloading before entering a match. Activision warns that leaving the main menu interrupts the process and can lead to performance problems. After a driver update, major game patch, or graphics-settings change, shader compilation may need to run again.

5. Repair the game files for your platform

Use the repair method for the storefront where Black Ops 6 is installed:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Battle.net: Use the launcher’s Scan and Repair option.
  • Steam: Disable or close interfering programs, then use Steam’s game-file integrity verification.
  • Microsoft Store or Xbox app: Use the app’s Verify and Repair function.

Repairing files can correct incomplete or damaged game data, but it cannot repair a faulty Windows driver, unstable RAM, an overheating component, or an aggressive overclock.

6. Return the PC to stock settings

Temporarily disable CPU, GPU, and RAM overclocking, undervolting, XMP or EXPO memory profiles, and tuning utilities. Activision specifically recommends disabling overclocking or tuning software when troubleshooting persistent PC problems. A system that appears stable in most games can still fail under a particular combination of shader compilation, anti-cheat activity, and game workloads.

Also update or temporarily close peripheral and device-control software, including utilities that manage RGB lighting, mice, keyboards, headsets, fan control, overlays, or capture functions. These programs are not automatically responsible, but they can introduce conflicts and are useful variables to remove during testing.

7. Try a clean boot if the problem continues

Activision recommends a clean boot for persistent problems. A clean boot starts Windows with nonessential third-party services and startup programs disabled, allowing you to test whether background software is involved. Re-enable items in groups after testing so that a returning crash can identify the likely conflict. Do not permanently disable security software or essential Windows services without understanding what they do.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Check for a wider Windows or hardware problem

If the computer blue-screens while browsing, idle, running another game, or starting outside Black Ops 6, treat the issue as a general system fault rather than a Call of Duty-only problem. Microsoft’s standard troubleshooting path includes:

For an optional Windows-focused check, Outbyte PC Repair may help identify common system errors and stability issues, but it is not a substitute for hardware testing or official support.

  • Removing recently added hardware and checking newly connected peripherals
  • Starting Windows in Safe Mode
  • Checking Device Manager for driver warnings
  • Maintaining adequate free disk space
  • Installing Windows updates
  • Using system recovery options if recurring stop codes remain

Repeated BSODs can also justify testing memory, storage, temperatures, and power stability. If the computer fails outside the game or cannot boot normally, stop treating this as a routine game-settings problem and use Windows recovery or qualified technical support.

9. Submit a Call of Duty PC Crash Report

For a repeatable Black Ops 6 crash that survives the steps above, submit Activision’s Call of Duty PC Crash Report. Include the stop code, crash location, game mode, hardware specifications, Windows build, driver version, storefront, and a list of overlays or tuning programs. Precise reproduction details are more useful than simply reporting that the game “doesn’t work.”

Should you disable Memory Integrity?

Some independent reports described a possible workaround through Windows Security → Device Security → Core isolation details → Memory integrity. This is not an officially verified Black Ops 6 BSOD fix. Memory Integrity is a Windows security protection that helps prevent certain types of malicious or unauthorized code from running in protected system processes.

Disabling it reduces that protection. It should not be the first troubleshooting step, and it should not be presented as a normal solution to the Season 02 crashes. If a technically qualified user tests this change as a temporary diagnostic measure, they should understand the security trade-off, record the original setting, restart as required, and re-enable Memory Integrity after testing. Do not combine this experiment with disabling multiple other Windows security mitigations or making unsupported boot-configuration changes.

Was Season 02 the cause of the BSODs?

The evidence supports a timing association: player reports appeared around the January 28, 2025 Season 02 launch, while the update also included a Ricochet kernel-level anti-cheat update and officially acknowledged game stability defects. That combination made a software interaction plausible to investigate.

It does not establish causation. The available evidence does not show that Activision confirmed Ricochet as the cause, that every blue screen came from the same defect, or that AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel systems were affected by one universal bug. The most accurate description is that Season 02 launched amid officially acknowledged stability issues and broader player-reported PC crashes, including BSODs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Current status of the historical issue

Later Season 02 updates addressed several AMD-related and Zombies-related crash categories, including issues involving AMD Radeon RX 400 and RX 500 graphics cards, AMD GPUs in Zombies, and pausing in Zombies. That is evidence of ongoing fixes—not proof that all PC blue screens were resolved by one update.

If Black Ops 6 is stable on your system now, the historical reports do not mean that every current PC installation remains affected. If it is still blue-screening, follow the Windows and driver checks above and determine whether the failure is limited to the game. Check Activision’s current Known Issues tracker and PC troubleshooting guidance because both the supported driver versions and the list of acknowledged issues can change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Activision confirm a Black Ops 6 Season 02 BSOD bug?

No. Activision officially acknowledged several Season 02 stability problems, including frequent issues on The Tomb for some AMD GPU users, but the broader reports of Windows blue screens came from independent reporting and players. The cited official documentation did not confirm a universal BSOD bug.

Did Ricochet cause the Black Ops 6 blue screens?

No. Some reports speculated that a Ricochet kernel-level anti-cheat update might be involved, but that explanation was not confirmed by Activision in the available sources. A timing association is not proof of causation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I turn off Windows Memory Integrity to fix Black Ops 6 crashes?

Disabling Memory Integrity was mentioned as an independently reported workaround, not an official fix. It reduces a Windows security protection and should not be disabled casually. If tested temporarily, restore it afterward.

What is the safest way to troubleshoot Black Ops 6 BSODs?

Start with Windows updates, the current supported graphics driver, completed shader preloading, and platform-specific file repair. Then disable overclocks and conflicting utilities, try a clean boot, and submit a PC Crash Report. If the computer also blue-screens outside Black Ops 6, investigate Windows, drivers, or hardware.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Black Ops 6 Season 02 did launch with officially acknowledged stability problems, while players independently reported broader PC crashes and BSODs across multiple hardware vendors and game modes. Update Windows and drivers, finish shader preloading, repair files, remove overclocks and conflicting utilities, and investigate recurring stop codes as possible Windows or hardware problems. Do not describe Ricochet as a proven cause, and do not treat disabling Memory Integrity as an official fix.
