Roblox lighting problems usually come from one of four places: the global Lighting service, an individual light object, a runtime script, or differences between Studio and the device rendering the experience. Start by identifying whether the whole scene, its shadows, or just one lamp is affected; then check the matching settings below.
First, identify what is not working
- The whole scene looks too dark or washed out: inspect global brightness, ambient settings, and time of day.
- Shadows are missing: check whether global shadows are enabled, then consider the lighting style and device rendering capability.
- One lamp or spotlight is missing: inspect that light object and where it is placed rather than changing global settings.
- Lighting changes after you press Play or join the published experience: compare edit-time settings with runtime behavior and look for scripts that change Lighting properties.
Check global Lighting properties
In Roblox Studio, select Lighting in Explorer and review its properties. The Lighting service controls the scene-wide environment, so these settings are the right place to start when the entire experience looks wrong. Roblox’s Lighting reference documents the properties and their effects.
- GlobalShadows: controls whether shadows are rendered. When disabled, Roblox does not distinguish indoor from outdoor areas, and
OutdoorAmbientis ignored. - Brightness: influences the intensity of illumination. If the whole scene is dim, check it alongside ambient settings rather than assuming a light object is broken.
- Ambient and OutdoorAmbient: affect the scene’s ambient appearance. Their results depend on the rest of the Lighting configuration; OutdoorAmbient has no effect when GlobalShadows is off.
- ClockTime: sets the scene’s lighting time, not your device’s actual local time. It remains fixed during play unless a script changes it.
Use the current lighting controls, not an old Technology tutorial
Some older Roblox tutorials tell creators to change Lighting.Technology. Roblox marks that property as superseded; the current controls are LightingStyle and PrioritizeLightingQuality. The Lighting class reference describes the current properties.
Roblox’s July 23, 2025 Unified Lighting announcement says Unified Lighting is live in all experiences and provides these mappings for recreating legacy looks:

These are compatibility mappings, not a universal recommendation to select Realistic. PrioritizeLightingQuality determines whether lighting detail is maintained more strongly while other aspects, such as draw distance, may be reduced.
If only one light source is failing
Roblox supports local light-source objects, including PointLight, SpotLight, and SurfaceLight. These are distinct from the global Lighting service and can be attached to parts or attachments. When a single lamp fails, inspect that object’s configuration and placement first; changing scene-wide settings can alter the entire experience without fixing the local issue. If shadows are missing or too blurry
First confirm GlobalShadows is enabled. If it is, the appearance can still vary with the selected lighting mode and the device’s ability to render shadow maps. Roblox documents that ShadowSoftness depends on both; its documented default is 0.2, and it controls shadow blur. Do not expect a particular softness value to look identical on every device. The Lighting reference lists these constraints.
If lighting changes in Play or in the published experience
A setting that looks correct while editing can be changed when the experience runs. Roblox specifically notes that ClockTime stays fixed during gameplay unless a script changes it. Search scripts for writes to Lighting and properties such as ClockTime, GlobalShadows, and Brightness if the scene changes after play begins.

- Compare the Lighting properties in edit mode with their values after pressing Play.
- Search scripts for assignments to Lighting properties, including code that sets time or turns shadows off.
- Test the published experience as well as Studio. If the difference appears only in one environment, note exactly where and when it occurs before changing more settings.
If the problem appears to be a Studio fault
If lighting settings and scripts do not explain the issue and Studio itself is behaving unexpectedly, Roblox Support’s general Studio troubleshooting article recommends general troubleshooting and asks users to provide details when an issue persists. Include your username, any error messages, device model, operating-system version, steps to reproduce the problem, the affected project link, and relevant recent changes. This is for broader Studio problems, not a substitute for checking a lighting property that is simply disabled or being changed by a script.
