First, protect your saves
Before changing files, removing mods, or resetting settings, back up your Spore saves and mod folders. The exact location depends on the edition and installation, but save folders are commonly stored in your user profile rather than the main game directory. Copy the relevant Spore folders to another location so you can restore them if a troubleshooting step makes the problem worse.

Then work through these fixes in order. Spore is a 32-bit Direct3D 9.0c game released in 2008, so modern drivers, overlays, launcher files, compatibility settings, injected graphics files, and old configuration data can all be relevant. That does not mean Windows 10 or Windows 11 universally breaks Spore: players report crashes on both versions, but the cause varies from one installation to another.
1. Verify or repair the Spore installation
Damaged, missing, or partially updated files are one of the simplest causes to eliminate. Use the repair option for the platform where you installed Spore.

Steam
- Restart the computer.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Spore and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to replace damaged or missing files, then restart Spore.
Steam may report that some files failed verification even when the installation is not still broken. Local configuration files can legitimately differ from the files distributed by Steam, so the important test is whether Spore launches or still crashes after Steam completes the repair.
EA app
- Open the EA app and select Library.
- Find Spore and open its three-dot menu.
- Choose Repair.
- Allow the process to finish before launching the game.
If the EA app itself is failing to load games or showing incorrect library information, open the EA app menu and use App Recovery > Clear Cache. Clearing the launcher cache can fix download, library, and launcher problems; it is not a universal solution for an in-game crash.
2. Test compatibility mode and administrator rights
Older Windows programs can stop working correctly after changes to Windows architecture, security features, or system requirements. Microsoft’s Program Compatibility Troubleshooter is the safest starting point, while compatibility-mode settings are a useful diagnostic test for Spore.
- Browse to Spore’s installation folder.
- Right-click the Spore executable or launcher you normally use.
- Choose Properties, then open the Compatibility tab.
- Run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter, or test a compatibility mode manually.
- Try Windows 7 compatibility first. If that does not help, test Windows XP (Service Pack 3).
- As a separate test, enable Run this program as an administrator.
- Launch Spore and check whether the result changes.
These settings are community workarounds, not an official guarantee from EA that one particular mode is correct. Test one change at a time and revert settings that do not help. Do not apply compatibility settings indiscriminately to every executable in the installation.
3. Disable overlays and nonessential background software
Overlays and utilities that inject themselves into a game can cause launch failures, black screens, freezes, or crashes. Temporarily disable the following before testing Spore:
- Steam Overlay
- EA in-game overlay
- Discord overlay
- NVIDIA, AMD, or other GPU recording and performance overlays
- RGB, keyboard, mouse, and peripheral-control utilities
- Screen capture, frame-monitoring, and hardware-tuning software
- Antivirus features that aggressively protect or sandbox games
Close other nonessential applications and launch Spore again. If the game works, re-enable programs one at a time until you identify the conflict. EA also recommends closing background applications and, when necessary, using a Windows clean boot to isolate software conflicts.
If antivirus software quarantined a Spore file, restore or allow-list it only after confirming that it came from the legitimate Steam or EA installation. Then verify or repair the game files again. Never bypass antivirus protection for a file from an untrusted download.
4. Cap the frame rate and enable V-Sync
Spore was designed for hardware much older than a modern high-refresh gaming PC. A frame-rate cap or V-Sync can make the game’s output more consistent with the display and may help with crashes or instability, although an excessive frame rate has not been established as the cause of every Spore crash.

If Spore launches:
- Open the game’s graphics or display settings.
- Enable V-Sync if the option is available.
- Apply the lowest practical frame-rate cap, such as 60 frames per second.
- Restart the game and test the area or activity that previously caused the crash.
If Spore crashes before you can reach its settings, use your graphics driver’s control panel to create a profile for Spore and apply a conservative frame-rate limit or V-Sync setting there. The exact menu names vary between NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel graphics software. Remove the profile if it has no effect.
5. Install Microsoft’s legacy DirectX components
A current DirectX version in Windows does not necessarily include every optional side-by-side library used by older games. Spore may rely on legacy components such as D3DX9, XAudio 2.7, XInput 1.3, or XACT.

Install the DirectX End-User Runtime from Microsoft’s official download source. It adds older components without replacing the main DirectX version built into Windows. Restart the computer after installation and test Spore again.
This is most relevant when you see a missing-DLL message, a startup failure, or a graphics or audio initialization error. It is less likely to fix a crash associated with one particular save, mod, DLC item, or in-game event.
Do not download individual DLL files from random websites. Those files can be outdated, malicious, or the wrong architecture. Use Microsoft’s installer instead.
6. Update or roll back the graphics driver
Install a graphics driver that matches your current Windows version and GPU. Start with Windows Update. If it does not provide a suitable driver, use the official support page for your NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel graphics hardware rather than a third-party driver-download site.
- Record your current graphics driver version before changing anything.
- Install the recommended driver from Windows Update or the GPU manufacturer.
- Restart the computer.
- Test Spore without changing other settings.
If the crashes began immediately after a driver update, rolling back to the previous stable driver is a reasonable diagnostic test. Windows may offer Roll Back Driver in Device Manager > Display adapters > your GPU > Properties > Driver. If that button is unavailable, obtain the earlier driver from the GPU manufacturer’s official support page.
Driver changes are most informative when performed separately from compatibility changes, frame-rate changes, and mod removal. Otherwise it becomes difficult to tell which change solved the problem.

7. Remove mods, injected files, and troublesome DLC combinations
If Spore worked before you installed a mod, custom package, graphics wrapper, or DLC combination, return temporarily to a clean installation. Back up your saves and mod files first, then disable or remove one change at a time.
Spore-specific community documentation warns that installing the base game and DLC from several different sources can create serious save-game and modding problems. Keep the game and its DLC within one supported distribution where possible instead of mixing files from unrelated releases.

If you knowingly installed a graphics wrapper or injector, check its installation instructions and remove those injected files only after backing them up. Do not delete unfamiliar files merely because their names look technical.
There is also a documented crash-related issue involving the Dr. Pepper Bot Parts Pack: a creature singing with a bot-parts mouth can trigger a crash in the affected setup. If your crash consistently occurs during that specific action, temporarily removing or disabling the relevant DLC is a more targeted test than reinstalling Windows or changing unrelated graphics settings.
On Linux or Steam Proton, Spore DLC can also be affected by separate-prefix issues. Those are Proton-specific troubleshooting cases and do not normally apply to a standard Windows installation.

Reset configuration files for Runtime Error R6025
For the specific Spore Runtime Error R6025, Spore-specific troubleshooting documentation identifies Login.prop and Preferences.prop as configuration files that may need to be regenerated.

- Close Spore and its launcher.
- Back up
Login.propandPreferences.propby copying them to another folder. - Open the Spore configuration location used by your installation.
- Delete or move those two files out of the configuration folder.
- Start Spore and allow it to create fresh versions.
Because the exact configuration location can vary by edition and setup, search your Spore user-data folders rather than deleting files from arbitrary directories. If the reset does not help, restore the backups and continue troubleshooting.
Test whether one save is the problem
If Spore crashes only when loading one save, entering one stage, or performing one action, create a new game and test it before changing more system settings. A new save that works points toward a save-specific, mod-specific, DLC-specific, or stage-specific problem, but it does not prove that the original save is permanently corrupted.

Keep the original save untouched. Do not overwrite it with a newly generated file while testing, and do not remove mods that the save depends on without first making a backup.
What to do if Spore still crashes
At this point, record the details that distinguish a launcher problem from a game, driver, save, or mod problem:
- When the crash occurs: before launch, at the main menu, while loading, or during a particular stage or action
- Your Windows version and edition
- Whether you use Steam, the EA app, or another legitimate installation source
- Your GPU model and graphics-driver version
- Whether overlays, mods, graphics injectors, or DLC are installed
- Whether a new game works while an existing save crashes
- Any error message, including Runtime Error R6025
- Relevant faulting-module information from Windows Event Viewer
Submit the details through EA’s Error Reporter and technical-support channels or through the support system for your game platform. A precise crash time and faulting module are more useful than simply reporting that “Spore does not work.”
Optional Windows diagnostics after the free fixes
If Spore is only one of several programs crashing or Windows itself appears unstable, an optional Windows cleanup and diagnostics utility may help you review broader system symptoms. PC cleanup and diagnostics software such as Outbyte PC Repair can provide system cleanup features and crash-log viewing for reference.
This is not a Spore-specific fix and should come after Steam, EA, Windows, Microsoft DirectX, and graphics-driver troubleshooting. Its own product information says that crash logs are provided for reference and that no software can automatically repair an application that is crashing, so do not expect guaranteed Spore compatibility or an automatic repair.
Best order to try the fixes
- Back up saves and mod folders.
- Verify or repair the installation.
- Disable overlays and nonessential background utilities.
- Test compatibility mode and administrator rights.
- Cap the frame rate or enable V-Sync.
- Update or roll back the graphics driver.
- Install Microsoft’s legacy DirectX components if startup or runtime errors suggest missing libraries.
- Remove mods and injected files, reset configuration files, and test a new save.
- Collect crash details and contact EA or platform support if the problem remains.
There is no single universal Spore crash fix. The fastest approach is to start with reversible platform repairs, then isolate overlays, compatibility, graphics, legacy libraries, mods, configuration files, and saves without changing several variables at once.

Is Spore incompatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11?
No. Spore can crash on both Windows 10 and Windows 11, but player reports are anecdotal and do not show that either version universally breaks the game. Compatibility settings, drivers, overlays, files, mods, and saves can all be involved.
