In HotHardware’s 15-game comparison, most titles showed little or no meaningful performance change between the normal Windows environment and Xbox Full Screen Experience. The clearest repeatable improvement appeared in F1 24, particularly its minimum frame rate. Elsewhere, gains were usually small enough that most players would not notice them during normal play.

That distinction matters. Full Screen Experience can be a genuine quality-of-life upgrade for a Windows gaming handheld, while still falling short of being a frame-rate “game-changer.” It reduces the friction of using Windows on a small touchscreen, and it may help memory-sensitive games in some circumstances. It does not remove the GPU limits that make demanding games demanding.

Because the full-screen environment makes conventional desktop benchmarking more complicated, the comparison used each game’s built-in benchmark. Every title was run three times in each mode, producing at least six runs per game. That is a useful repeated test, but it remains a plugged-in, maximum-performance scenario rather than a representation of battery-powered play.

Performance results: mostly unchanged, with one notable exception
F1 24 delivered the clearest improvement
F1 24 produced the most convincing performance difference in the test, with the improvement showing up most clearly in the minimum frame rate. The result persisted across multiple runs, making it more significant than a one-off fluctuation.
HotHardware associated this result with memory pressure. In the proper boot-time full-screen environment, Windows does not load the ordinary desktop shell. That can free roughly 2GB of memory. On a handheld using integrated graphics, system memory is also used as graphics memory, so freeing RAM can potentially help a memory-constrained game.
That explanation should be treated as an informed interpretation, not a separately proven causal experiment. The benchmark measured the difference between the two modes; it did not independently isolate every background process or prove that the freed memory alone caused the F1 24 result. The safe conclusion is that F1 24 benefited noticeably more than the other tested games, possibly because it was more sensitive to available memory and background overhead.
Several games showed no meaningful benefit
Forza Horizon 5 and Total War: Warhammer III produced identical results across the repeated comparisons. Middle-earth: Shadow of War also showed no meaningful advantage.
That is important because it rules out the simplistic claim that removing the desktop automatically makes every game faster. If the game is primarily limited by the handheld’s graphics hardware, a cleaner shell cannot create a large performance increase by itself.
Small gains do not necessarily change the experience
Red Dead Redemption 2 gained slightly more than one frame per second in the reported results. In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the minimum frame rate rose from 28 to 31 frames per second.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Those are measurable changes, but they are not automatically perceptible during play. A three-frame improvement in a minimum benchmark result may help a particular scene or reduce a brief stutter, yet it does not mean the entire game suddenly feels significantly smoother. Average frame rate, frame-time consistency, display refresh rate, image-quality settings, and the duration of the slowdown all matter.
Borderline AAA games remained borderline
Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora were configured close to the edge of playable performance. Full Screen Experience did not provide enough uplift to change that conclusion under the tested settings.
In other words, switching modes was not a substitute for lowering settings, reducing resolution, or using an appropriate upscaling option. Those games may become more playable after graphical compromises, but that was outside the purpose of this comparison. Full Screen Experience should not be marketed as a way to make every demanding AAA title run well without changing its settings.
Why the mode can feel like a bigger upgrade than the benchmarks suggest
The most reliable improvement is not raw performance. It is the interface.
In the proper boot-time mode, Windows launches into an Xbox-centered full-screen environment instead of loading the normal desktop shell. The interface is designed for navigation with a controller and presents recently played games, the library, Xbox features, and supported PC-game launchers in one handheld-oriented space.
That addresses one of the biggest weaknesses of Windows handhelds: the hardware may be console-sized, but the operating system was designed primarily for a desktop, mouse, and keyboard. On a small touchscreen, finding a launcher, closing a background utility, switching windows, or managing an update can feel disproportionately awkward.
Independent testing found the Xbox interface substantially easier to use on a handheld than ordinary Windows 11. It can make the device feel faster even when the game’s frame rate has barely changed, because the user spends less time interacting with desktop menus and launcher windows.

- Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
- Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
- Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
- Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.
What Full Screen Experience does not replace
The mode is not a complete replacement for the Windows desktop. Some tasks still require desktop mode, including certain app-management, file-management, and system-administration functions. Launcher integration and task switching can also feel rough around the edges.
There is another technical distinction that is easy to miss:
- Booting directly into Full Screen Experience: Windows skips the normal desktop shell, which is the lower-overhead state relevant to the memory-saving discussion.
- Exiting to the desktop and reopening the Xbox app: This gives you the Xbox interface again, but it does not fully recreate the original boot-time condition.
If you leave for desktop mode and want to regain the clean boot-time state, you need to reboot. Simply reopening the Xbox app is not equivalent.
Startup applications that depend on the ordinary Windows desktop may also fail to launch while the device is in the boot-time full-screen environment. That can be beneficial when those programs consume resources, but it may surprise users who expect every utility, overlay, sync client, or peripheral-management tool to be running automatically.
Does Full Screen Experience free RAM?
It can. The normal desktop shell and associated startup software are not loaded in the same way when the device boots directly into the Xbox environment. Reviews reported that the mode frees memory, with the frequently cited figure being roughly 2GB in a system using integrated graphics.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMore available memory is potentially useful on a handheld because the Ryzen platform does not have a separate pool of dedicated graphics memory in the way a desktop graphics card does. The CPU and integrated GPU share system memory. However, free RAM is not the same thing as guaranteed FPS.
Additional memory helps only when memory availability or background activity is limiting the game. If the integrated GPU is already the main bottleneck, removing the desktop shell will not produce a major improvement. That is why the benchmark pattern makes sense: a memory-sensitive title such as F1 24 may benefit, while other games remain effectively unchanged.

What this means for the ROG Xbox Ally X hardware
The tested product is the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X, officially distinct from the 2024 ROG Ally X. ASUS lists Windows 11, an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme platform, a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz touchscreen, an 80Wh battery, and expandable storage for the newer Xbox-branded handheld.
Its hardware can access supported Xbox and PC games from multiple stores, which is part of the appeal of the Xbox-centered interface. But the screen, processor, memory configuration, and power profile still determine what games can render comfortably. A console-like launcher cannot turn the handheld into a higher-tier GPU.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If you are shopping, search specifically for ROG Xbox Ally X or ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X. “ROG Ally X” is commonly used for the 2024 non-Xbox-branded model, and confusing the two can lead to the wrong specifications, accessories, or buying advice.
Storage, accessories, and performance: keep the categories separate
The Ally X supports expandable storage, making a compatible Xbox Ally X microSD card or an M.2 2280 NVMe SSD for ROG Xbox Ally X useful when a large PC library quickly fills the internal drive.
Storage expansion solves capacity and installation problems. It is not automatically a frame-rate upgrade. A faster or larger drive may improve installation management and, depending on the game and storage configuration, affect loading behavior, but it does not provide the same type of performance change as lowering resolution, changing an upscaling mode, or using a higher-power profile.
Likewise, a carrying case, dock, or additional charger can improve portability and desk use, but none should be treated as a benchmark-performance product. A dock is useful for connecting the handheld to a larger display and peripherals; a case protects it in a bag; neither changes the integrated GPU’s rendering capability.

- Install current system updates and graphics drivers. The benchmark was performed with updates and current drivers, so older software may not behave the same way.
- Use the correct performance profile. Turbo mode and a connected 140W adapter were part of the reported test conditions. Battery mode will have different power and performance limits.
- Boot directly into the full-screen environment. Reopening the Xbox app after visiting the desktop does not reproduce the same low-overhead boot state.
- Keep expectations realistic. Test the games you actually play. A gain in F1 24 does not establish a gain in Cyberpunk 2077, Avatar, or every other title.
- Change game settings before blaming the interface. For demanding games, reducing a few expensive settings or using a suitable resolution-scaling option is more likely to produce a substantial improvement than switching shells.
- Use desktop mode when necessary. File management, some launcher operations, utilities, updates, and system controls may still require the normal Windows interface.
- Reboot after desktop work if you want the full boot-time benefit again. Returning to the Xbox app alone is not enough.
Is Xbox Full Screen Experience a game-changer?
For usability, it can be. The controller-first interface makes the ROG Xbox Ally X easier to pick up, navigate, and use from the sofa or on the go. It reduces the feeling that you are operating a miniature desktop PC every time you want to launch a game.

For frame rates, usually not. Across the 15-title test, most results moved little or not at all. The strongest repeatable result was in F1 24, while the modest gains in games such as Red Dead Redemption 2 and Shadow of the Tomb Raider were unlikely to transform actual play. The mode did not make the borderline settings in Assassin’s Creed Shadows or Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora comfortably playable by itself.
The fairest verdict is therefore: Xbox Full Screen Experience is a console-style usability upgrade with occasional performance benefits, not a universal FPS multiplier. It is most valuable to buyers who want Windows game-library flexibility without dealing with the desktop at every step. It is much less compelling as a reason to expect a major graphics-performance increase.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Xbox Full Screen Experience increase FPS in every game?
No. Most of the 15 tested games showed little or no meaningful performance change. F1 24 had the clearest repeatable improvement, especially in minimum frame rate, while several other titles were unchanged or gained only a small amount.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How much RAM does Xbox Full Screen Experience save?
It can free memory by avoiding the normal Windows desktop shell and some startup activity, but the reported roughly 2GB saving is not a guaranteed frame-rate increase. The explanation for the F1 24 result is an interpretation of the benchmark, not a separately isolated causal test.
Does reopening the Xbox app restore the same performance mode?
No. Exiting to desktop and reopening the Xbox app does not fully recreate the lower-overhead boot-time state. Reboot the handheld to return to the proper full-screen boot environment.
Will an SSD or microSD card make the Xbox Ally X faster in games?
No. A storage upgrade increases capacity and may help with managing a large library, but it is not automatically an FPS upgrade. Performance is more directly affected by settings, resolution scaling, power mode, drivers, and the game’s workload.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Full Screen Experience makes the ROG Xbox Ally X feel more console-like and may free enough memory to help selected titles, but HotHardware’s 15-game test found little meaningful FPS movement in most games. Buy into it for the cleaner handheld experience—not because it guarantees faster performance.
