If you use mods or custom content, test the game without them before changing saves or game files. An outdated mod is one possible cause, but the symptom alone does not identify a universal fix.
First, check what still responds
Before changing anything, note what you can and cannot do. Does the pointer move? Can you open the game menu or use keyboard shortcuts? Are clicks ignored everywhere, only on Sims and objects, or only after leaving Build/Buy mode? Also note your platform, whether the game recently updated, and whether you use mods or custom content (CC).

These distinctions matter: a single Sim that will not act is different from an interface that ignores every click. If clicks also fail outside The Sims 4, this is no longer clearly a game-only issue; the available guidance here does not establish a hardware fault.
If you use mods or custom content
EA says, “Mods can cause issues and conflict with The Sims 4 in many different ways.” An EA forum response to a similar loss-of-control report also suggests an outdated UI Cheats mod as a possible lead, particularly when the trouble follows exiting Build Mode. That is community troubleshooting, not a confirmed explanation for every case or every mod version.

Test a clean setup
- Exit The Sims 4.
- Temporarily move the Mods folder out of the Sims 4 user folder; do not delete it.
- Delete
localthumbcache.package. - Launch the game and test in a new save. This avoids testing the existing save without the mods it normally uses.
The forum guidance recommends this test for the matching loss-of-control symptom. If the game works, a mod or CC conflict is a plausible cause; it does not identify the particular file by itself.
Find the problem mod
EA recommends testing game mods before custom content, then adding files back in batches and checking the game after each batch. If the problem returns, split that batch and test again, repeating until you narrow it down. EA calls this the “50/50 method.” Check the creator’s page for a version compatible with your current game update.

If only one Sim is stuck
EA’s reset instructions apply when a Sim is stuck, not when the entire interface is unresponsive. You can open the cheat console on PC or Mac with Ctrl+Shift+C and enter resetSim Firstname Lastname, replacing the example text with the Sim’s first and last name. With testing cheats enabled, you can also Shift-click the Sim and choose Reset Object (Debug). Console controls for opening cheats differ.
Resetting returns the Sim to a playable state, but does not send them home. Their needs are preserved; wishes and moodlets are canceled. The command resetSim * may not reset every Sim.

If clicks still fail in a clean save
If the problem persists after removing mods and testing a new save, the EA forum response recommends a factory reset. Before moving or replacing user files, follow EA’s official backup and reset instructions. Treat this as a later diagnostic step, not a reason to delete or overwrite saves as your first move.
