The dead golfer hidden in Golden Tee ’99 is course designer Jim Zielinski himself. He told software engineer Tino Kalafatis, who relayed the explanation to PC Gamer, that the figure is a digitized photo of him lying in grass outside the office. The developers placed it in the woods as a surprise for players whose shots strayed off course.
Where is the dead golfer in Golden Tee ’99?
The body is on the seventh hole of Aspen Lake, roughly 180 yards from the tee and slightly to the right, in the woods. It is easy to miss if you keep your shot on the fairway: the pixelated figure is an off-course detail, accompanied by a golf club and, in some presentations, a pool of blood.
PC Gamer writer Wes Fenlon said a Keith’s Arcade video first drew his attention to the scene. The feature’s location and visual description are Fenlon’s reporting, not an in-game explanation that the game spells out for players.
Who is the figure, and why did the developers put it there?
It is Zielinski, a Golden Tee course designer and co-creator. Kalafatis, a software engineer who had worked at Incredible Technologies since the 1980s, asked Zielinski directly and relayed his answer to Fenlon. As PC Gamer reports Zielinski’s explanation: “Yes this is legit. Back in the day we thought it would be fun to put some interesting things to look at off in the woods in case players made an errant shot. The dead guy was my idea, and it’s actually a digitized photo of me laying in the grass outside our office. We digitized the photo and put it into the game,”

The setting was part of the joke: players who missed the intended line could stumble across something unexpected in the trees. Zielinski also said he hid digitized versions of himself behind the first tee on several early Golden Tee 3D courses, where friends and family could find him by starting a game and turning around. In the feature’s account, he said: “For a lot of the early Golden Tee 3D golf courses, I also placed a digitized version of myself directly behind the first tee, so my friends and family could easily find me in the game. They just had to start a game, turn around 180 degrees, and I’d be standing there.”
How did the dead golfer become a mystery?
The early lead was not a confirmation. Fenlon contacted artist Stephen Alexander, who vaguely remembered the image but did not know how it got into the game. Alexander guessed it might have been Zielinski, who handled much of the art placement in that version. As PC Gamer quotes him: “I vaguely remember that this was a thing, but unfortunately I don’t know how it got in,”

That guess pointed the reporter in the right direction, but the identification and explanation came later, when Kalafatis asked Zielinski. The distinction matters: Alexander’s recollection was uncertain; Zielinski’s account, relayed by Kalafatis, is the source for the photo’s identity and purpose.

Fenlon reported seeing the body without blood in the Steam release, Golden Tee Arcade Classics, while his MAME presentation showed blood. Zielinski suggested there may have been two versions—one with the blood pool and another without—but was not sure. PC Gamer also said it identified two Golden Tee ’99 revisions in Arcade Database, v1.00 and v1.00S; Fenlon’s reported MAME test of a v1.00S ROM showed both the body and blood.

| Presentation or revision | What PC Gamer reported |
|---|---|
| Golden Tee Arcade Classics on Steam | Fenlon saw the body without visible blood. |
| Golden Tee ’99 v1.00S in MAME | Fenlon reported seeing the body and blood. |
| Golden Tee ’99 v1.00 | Named as a revision in the feature; no blood observation for it was described. |
These are observations from Fenlon’s feature, not a verified rule for every copy or setup. The reporting did not establish whether the difference came from a game revision, the Steam collection, or another cause. It does not support saying that Steam censored the blood or that v1.00S removed it; the reported v1.00S MAME observation includes blood.
The feature also teases a Sasquatch-like figure near the green, but does not establish its identity or explain what it is doing there. It remains a separate unanswered detail, not a confirmed creature identification.
