Zelda’s money is called rupees because the name evokes both the Indian rupee and rubies. Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of The Legend of Zelda, explained that the jewel-like currency suited the game’s swords-and-sorcery world. Nintendo’s interview does not say “rupee” was a mistranslation of “ruby.”
What Shigeru Miyamoto said about the name
In a 2016 interview about the original The Legend of Zelda, Nintendo asked Miyamoto whether the currency name came from the Indian rupee. He replied, “I can see why people think of Indian rupees, but they’re also like rubies.”
Asked why that idea suited the game, Miyamoto said, “The game features a world of swords and sorcery, and you adventure across this spectacular land called Hyrule, so it seemed appropriate.” Nintendo UK’s interview therefore points to two associations: the real-world currency name and the gemstones the in-game objects resemble.
Are Zelda’s rupees named after Indian money or rubies?
Miyamoto’s answer connects the name with both. He acknowledges that “rupees” brings Indian rupees to mind, while also saying the objects are like rubies. The fantasy setting explains why jewel-like currency felt fitting; the interview does not describe Zelda’s rupees as the Indian currency itself.

Was “rupee” a mistranslation of “ruby”?
The cited interview does not support that claim. Miyamoto describes the resemblance to rubies and the association with Indian rupees, but he does not say the name arose from a translation error. The interview also does not give a date for when the name was chosen or document other names considered.
His explanation concerns the original game’s naming and look; it does not establish currency rules or denominations across every later Zelda game.
