Bone meal can help growth, but the official guidance does not say it overrides unsuitable placement, low light, or obstructions. The exact space a tree needs depends on its type, so Java or Bedrock edition, game version, and sapling species matter.
Check the sapling’s basic growing conditions
Work through these checks before using more bone meal. Minecraft’s general sapling guide identifies a suitable planting block, light level 8, and space that varies by tree type as requirements for the saplings it describes.
- Confirm the plant is a tree sapling. The guide describes oak, birch, spruce, jungle, acacia, and dark oak saplings. Do not treat that list as exhaustive for every current edition or version; newer releases may add tree-related content.
- Check the block directly underneath. The guide lists dirt, coarse dirt, podzol, grass, and farmland as suitable planting blocks for the saplings it covers.
- Check light. The guide specifies light level 8. It does not detail edition-specific measurement methods, so use the condition as a check rather than assuming a particular measurement procedure.
- Clear room around and above the sapling. Space requirements differ by tree type. The general guide does not provide exact clearance dimensions, so avoid applying one species’ layout to another.
Why bone meal may not fix the problem
Minecraft’s bone article describes bone meal as a way to feed crops and make them grow faster. It does not give a tree-specific guarantee or say bone meal bypasses a sapling’s support block, light, or space requirements. Applying more is therefore not a reliable fix when one of those conditions is missing, and the cited guidance does not specify a number of applications that guarantees a tree.
Make sure you are targeting the right plant
Bone-meal behavior is not identical for every plant or feature. Recent official notes give examples of separate mechanics: Java Edition 26.1 documents a configured-feature tag that controls whether features can spawn from bone meal; Bedrock 26.40 describes bone meal growing a Red Shrub in an adjacent space when possible and growing a small Shelf Mushroom; and Java Edition 26.3 describes corresponding Red Shrub and Shelf Mushroom behavior. These examples concern other features and plants; they do not establish a complete tree-sapling rule or mean every plant responds the same way.

Does the dimension matter?
The official sapling guide says trees can grow in the Nether and End under the conditions it describes, and advises bringing dirt for planting. Treat this as general guidance, not a guarantee for every newer tree species or custom world.

If the checks do not explain the issue, identify the sapling species, whether you play Java or Bedrock, and your exact game version. Those details are needed for precise clearance advice; the general official sapling article does not provide a species-by-species obstruction chart.
