Gygax Jr. Elliot’s company also announced it would rebrand as Top Secret NWO. The decision followed public controversy over Gygax Jr.’s remarks about race and gender identity, as reported at the time by Gizmodo.
Why did Elliot’s TSR Games break ties?
Gizmodo’s July 1, 2021 report linked the break to remarks Gygax Jr. made in a June 23 interview with SciFi4Me. The report described his comments about race and gender identity, as well as his criticism of Wizards of the Coast’s approach to racism in Dungeons & Dragons. It also recounted the response from the separate publisher associated with Gygax Jr. These are the events and characterizations presented in that contemporaneous report, not a finding about either man’s motives.

After the controversy, Elliot’s company publicly rejected further association with the other publisher. Its statement, as reported by Gizmodo, said it would not license the TSR Games name to that publisher or “work with them in any fashion.” The company also said it was “not abandoning” the TSR Games name generally, while announcing that its own operation would become Top Secret NWO, named for an upcoming game.
Two publishers shared the TSR Games name
The name is easy to confuse in accounts of the dispute. Gizmodo described two distinct publishers using TSR Games: Jayson Elliot’s company and a separate publisher associated with Ernie G. Gygax Jr. and Justin LaNasa. The announcement of a Top Secret NWO rebrand and the refusal to work with the other publisher concerned Elliot’s company. It should not be read as a statement made by the LaNasa-associated publisher.

How other gaming figures and organizations responded
The report also described reactions beyond the two companies. Gen Con stated its position regarding the 2021 convention, and Luke Gygax said he, his family, and Gary Con were not involved in his brother’s work. Luke characterized the other publisher as a “quick nostalgia money grab based on my father’s name and not much else”; that was his opinion, as quoted by Gizmodo, rather than an independently established description.

The report is a snapshot published on July 1, 2021. It documents the announced break in business ties and planned rebrand at that time, but does not establish what either publisher is called or doing now. It also recounts an apology thread that had been deleted; Gizmodo said it had seen screenshots, so that deleted material should not be treated as independently preserved primary documentation.
