Josh Lee Kwai resigned from Magic: The Gathering’s Commander Advisory Group in September 2024, shortly after the Commander Rules Committee announced four bans. Kwai had publicly said he disagreed with the bans, but the available reporting does not establish that disagreement as the sole reason he resigned.
What happened
The resignation followed a consequential change to Commander’s banned list:
- September 23, 2024: The Commander Rules Committee banned Dockside Extortionist, Jeweled Lotus, Mana Crypt, and Nadu, Winged Wisdom in Commander, effective that day for tabletop play and Magic Online. The announcement linked three bans to reducing explosive starts and discussed Nadu’s gameplay pattern. Wizards’ announcement.
- September 24: ICv2 reported that Kwai had posted that he disliked the bans and considered them a bad call. ICv2’s report.
- September 25: Kwai posted a public statement announcing his resignation from the Commander Advisory Group. ICv2 reported the resignation on September 26. The report reproduces the statement’s opening line, but presents its body as an image rather than a text transcript, so its full wording should not be inferred.
- September 30: Wizards announced that the former Rules Committee was handing Commander management to Wizards’ game design team. Wizards’ transition announcement.
What is established about his reason for leaving?
The timing and Kwai’s public opposition to the bans are documented. That supports describing the bans as the immediate context for his resignation, but it does not prove they were his only reason. Nor does the evidence establish that his resignation caused Wizards to take over management; Wizards announced that transition several days later and cited the workload and public exposure involved in managing the format, as well as threats against committee members.
Which Commander group did Kwai leave?
Kwai resigned from the Commander Advisory Group (CAG), not the Commander Rules Committee. The CAG advised the Rules Committee; the Rules Committee was the body managing the format before the September 2024 handoff. Wizards later created a different body, the Commander Format Panel, to provide community feedback alongside its teams.
