The result is funny, instantly recognizable, and an unusually neat fit for a crossover card—though “one of the best” is a matter of taste, not a measured popularity or tournament ranking.
What the Jumbo Cactuar card does
Jumbo Cactuar is card 191 in the Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY main set. The set’s official card list also includes a borderless woodblock version as card 343: Wizards’ FINAL FANTASY card image gallery.
In the game, it is a seven-mana 1/7 Plant creature with the ability “10,000 Needles — Whenever this creature attacks, it gets +9999/+0 until end of turn.” That gives it a 10,000-power attack for the turn, while its toughness remains 7. The printed +9999 is the rules effect; it is not a published statistic about the card’s popularity or performance.
Why the 10,000 Needles joke works
In Final Fantasy, Cactuars are associated with the signature attack 10,000 Needles. Square Enix’s official card showcase says the art depicts Jumbo Cactuar using that attack against Irving, and calls the character “funny” and “whimsical.” The description is team commentary rather than a statement attributed to a named individual: Square Enix’s FINAL FANTASY card showcase.

Magic usually presents combat through comparatively modest creature stats. Against that scale, a 1/7 that suddenly swings for 10,000 power is a visual punchline as well as a mechanical translation of the source-game reference. The card does not merely mention 10,000 Needles in its name: the attack trigger makes the number the entire point of attacking.
Wizards has described “Cute and Whimsical” as one of the set’s creative pillars, while discussing how the cards can feel specific to Final Fantasy and still make sense to people who do not know every game-specific reference. Jumbo Cactuar is a clear example: fans recognize the attack, and other players can still read the oversized combat bonus as a joke. See Wizards’ creative article about the set.

Is it really one of MTG’s best monsters?
That is a subjective verdict, not a claim backed by a popularity poll, sales figure, or tournament result. The case for Jumbo Cactuar is its economy: one recognizable Final Fantasy idea becomes a creature, a named ability, and a startlingly large attack value. Its humor is legible even if a player misses the Irving reference; knowing the reference adds another layer rather than being required to understand the card.

Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY brings together characters and worlds from the sixteen core Final Fantasy games. Its tabletop release was June 13, 2025. The collection guide classified the main set as Standard legal at release and separately identified Commander and Through the Ages products; that release-era information should not be taken as a statement of current format legality. Wizards lists Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Commander decks, and a Starter Kit among the physical product formats on its product page. The official card image gallery distinguishes the main-set and borderless versions.
