Warhorse Studios staff say they want to make Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 without repeatedly being assigned political labels. In a February 2025 interview, global PR manager Tobias Stolz-Zwilling said, “It seems like someone is always trying to brand us somehow, and we are just trying to make a cool videogame.” The comments came amid criticism of the game from opposing political directions; Warhorse’s explanations for its character choices are the studio’s account, not independent proof of every historical detail.
What Warhorse said about being pulled into the dispute
PC Gamer reported on February 3, 2025, that Stolz-Zwilling described Warhorse as repeatedly branded by people arguing over the politics of its games. He said publisher Plaion and parent company Embracer did not dictate what the studio should include. In his account, community feedback was the outside influence, while the developers were focused on making the game. He also said, “In an ideal world, we would like not to be connected to these fights at all.” PC Gamer’s February 2025 interview identifies Stolz-Zwilling as Warhorse’s global PR manager.

Why the sequel drew criticism from different directions
PC Gamer’s account describes a reversal in the political direction of some criticism. Before the first Kingdom Come: Deliverance launched in 2018, it faced criticism over the representation of people of color and claims about historical accuracy. The sequel, by contrast, drew criticism from some on the political right over an optional gay romance and a wider range of non-white and non-Christian characters. These are broad descriptions of the debate, not positions shared by every critic.
How Warhorse explained the character choices
Kuttenberg and the setting
Warhorse tied the broader range of characters to the sequel’s move from rural villages to Kuttenberg, a major Bohemian city and financial center. Senior game designer Ondřej Bittner said, “There’s more ethnicities in Kuttenberg because Kuttenberg is the royal mint.” He added, “I think that it’s important to not just include these people, but their vision of the world.”

Research and characterization
Stolz-Zwilling said the studio’s choices followed the setting and historical record, and that historian Joanna Nowak and deeper research informed the sequel. PC Gamer also reported that the game gives more dimension to Cuman characters and other residents by exploring different backgrounds and motivations. Those points describe Warhorse’s rationale and the interview’s account of the game; they do not establish that its depiction is historically comprehensive.

In a January 9, 2026 follow-up, Warhorse co-founder and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 executive producer Martin Klíma said it was difficult to determine whether the disputes affected sales or reception: “You can really convincingly argue both ways.” He offered a personal view that the controversies probably mattered little to the games and had only a small effect on developers. Klíma also characterized the arguments as largely confined to a small group of highly online culture-war participants. These are his assessments, not measured sales, audience or staff-morale findings. PC Gamer’s January 2026 interview with Klíma gives his comments and uncertainty.
