Rockstar confirmed on January 12, 2016, that Leslie Benzies would not return after beginning a sabbatical on September 1, 2014. The company did not give a reason in that announcement or state his exact final day as an employee. Later, Benzies’s legal representative and Rockstar offered conflicting accounts of the breakdown, so the public record does not establish one agreed explanation.
When did Leslie Benzies leave Rockstar?
Rockstar said Benzies began a sabbatical on September 1, 2014, and had decided not to return. The company made that non-return public on January 12, 2016. That announcement date is not necessarily the date his employment formally ended. Kotaku’s contemporaneous report reproduced Rockstar’s statement; Engadget’s report also covered the announcement.
At the time, Benzies was president of Rockstar North and a prominent contributor to the Grand Theft Auto series. Contemporary coverage also credited him as a producer on Red Dead Redemption and other games. That is not the same as saying he created those games alone: Rockstar’s statement credited him with helping build the team behind them.
Was Leslie Benzies fired?
The available public statements do not establish that he was fired. Rockstar’s January 2016 announcement said he decided not to return after his sabbatical, but did not explain the circumstances or identify a specific reason. In April 2016, Benzies’s legal representative alleged that he tried to resume his duties and was prevented from doing so; Rockstar later said performance and conduct issues culminated in his resignation. Those opposing accounts should not be treated as settled fact.

What Benzies’s side alleged
A statement issued by Benzies’s legal representative said his lawsuit claimed more than $150 million in unpaid royalties. It also alleged that when Benzies attempted to resume work on April 1, 2015, his access device had been deactivated and he was told to leave. These were claims made by his side, not independent findings or a court award. The legal representative’s April 12, 2016 statement set out that account.
What Rockstar said
In its response, Rockstar called the claims without merit and said: “Sadly, the events that culminated in his resignation ultimately stem from his significant performance and conduct issues.” That was the company’s account, not a judicial finding. The Guardian reported Rockstar’s response on April 13, 2016.

What did the court decide?
A New York Supreme Court order dated December 19, 2016, granted the defendants’ motion to dismiss in part and denied it in part. The order discussed agreements concerning employment, royalties, and the sabbatical; it does not establish the truth of either side’s broader account of why Benzies did not return, nor does it mean that all claims were upheld or rejected. The published order in Benzies v. Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. provides the procedural record.

GameSpot reported in February 2016 that Aaron Garbut and Rob Nelson took over management roles at Rockstar North. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick praised Benzies and expressed confidence in the Grand Theft Auto franchise’s future, while Rockstar emphasized the continuing work of its team. GameSpot’s February 3, 2016 report covered Zelnick’s comments and the management transition.
