Magic: The Gathering’s 2021 Secret Lair x Stranger Things made the crossover characters into mechanically unique cards, then Wizards of the Coast followed with Magic-themed versions of those same game pieces. That combination—distinctive branded art and another route to the cards for play—is a strong case for calling it a crossover benchmark. “Gold standard,” though, is an argument about the product’s design and release model, not a proven consensus among players.
What made the Stranger Things drop distinctive
Announced on October 14, 2021, Secret Lair x Stranger Things presented eight character cards and a unique Clue token in traditional foil and non-foil versions. Wizards described the cards as brand-new and suitable for Commander or collecting.
- Chief Jim Hopper
- Dustin, Gadget Genius
- Eleven, the Mage
- Lucas, the Sharpshooter
- Max, the Daredevil
- Mike, the Dungeon Master
- Mind Flayer, the Shadow
- Will the Wise
- A unique Clue token
The character names and Stranger Things presentation made the crossover legible as a piece of the show’s world, while the cards were designed as Magic game pieces rather than merely decorative versions of existing cards. That mechanical distinctiveness is central to the set’s appeal—and to the access question its release raised.
How Wizards addressed access to the cards
In a June 2021 policy update, Wizards said its plan for mechanically unique Secret Lair crossover cards was to create Magic-universe versions for The List about six months after the Secret Lair release. The company said the versions would count as equivalent game pieces: a player could use only the applicable deck limit across both versions. Wizards described the goal as creating “fun and collectable expressions of your favorite characters from other, well, universes.”

In April 2022, Wizards reported that Magic-themed versions of the Stranger Things cards were on The List for Streets of New Capenna. Those cards had different art but were mechanically identical to their Stranger Things counterparts and counted as the same card for deck construction. Their format legality remained unchanged: appearing on The List did not make a card Standard-legal if it was not already legal in Standard.
For that 2022 release specifically, Wizards said The List cards appeared in the final slot of Streets of New Capenna Set Boosters about 25% of the time, and that one in eight of those Set Boosters could potentially contain a Magic-themed Secret Lair x Stranger Things card, on average. These are historical, set-specific distribution figures—not odds for all Magic boosters or a description of current products.

Why this release makes a strong crossover benchmark
Character identity became playable card design
The drop’s strongest design case is that it turned recognizable Stranger Things characters into mechanically unique Magic cards. For collectors, the branded art and character presentation made the cards distinctive. For players, the cards had an identity within the game that went beyond a reskin of an existing card.
The follow-up offered another version of the same game pieces
The Magic-themed versions on The List gave players a non-Stranger Things presentation of the same mechanics. That matters because access to the gameplay did not have to mean obtaining the crossover-branded printing. The versions remained subject to the same deck-construction limits, so they were alternate appearances of the same cards, not additional copies a player could stack in a deck.

Collectibility and access were in tension
The original drop was sold through a limited preorder window, which made the branded release a time-bounded product. The List follow-up broadened the route to equivalent cards, but through a specific Streets of New Capenna Set Booster release. This is a useful balance between collector-facing presentation and access to the game pieces, not proof that every player could readily obtain either version.
What the Walking Dead comparison shows—and does not
Secret Lair x The Walking Dead is a useful earlier comparison because it also introduced mechanically unique crossover cards through a limited preorder window. In a later policy update, Wizards said it had changed course and would make in-Magic versions of those cards available on The List, while describing the approach it planned for later Secret Lair Universes Beyond releases.

- READY FOR PLAY, MAGIC & GIFTS – Use the decks for poker, rummy, blackjack, solitaire, beginner magic tricks, card flourishes, cardistry practice, family game night, travel entertainment, party games, collector shelves, birthdays, holidays, stocking stuffers, and fan gifts.
That history helps explain why the Stranger Things release is notable: it arrived within a developing policy for balancing external characters, unique mechanics, and Magic-universe versions. The comparison documents a change in Wizards’ approach; it does not establish which crossover players preferred or prove that Stranger Things was universally better received.
