Footage reported in May 2025 also showed players opening the menu with L and R and choosing Free Roam to carry on from the title-screen location. That is a reported behavior in the footage, not a guarantee for every version or game state.
What makes Mario Kart World’s title screen different?
Instead of presenting a fixed piece of artwork, Mario Kart World shows a driver moving through an in-game environment. Nintendo Life described the screen as a change from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s static artwork when it reported on the footage in May 2025.
The distinction is more than motion for motion’s sake: the scene gives a glimpse of the connected world the game is built around. Nintendo describes courses linked by roads and a Free Roam mode for exploring beyond races. Its official Mario Kart World Direct overview introduces those features.
Is the title screen actually gameplay?
It is an in-game scene, with a driver moving through the world, rather than static title artwork. In its May 24, 2025 report, Nintendo Life showed footage in which L and R opened the menu and selecting Free Roam continued from the title-screen location.

That footage supports the idea of a seamless handoff, but it does not establish that every player will start Free Roam at the same place, or that the transition works identically in every software version. Nintendo’s update history does not specify a current title-screen scene or promise that Free Roam always resumes there.
Why does the screen fit this game?
Nintendo has framed Mario Kart World as a connected world rather than simply another numbered collection of courses. In its Ask the Developer interview, producer Kosuke Yabuki explained the naming decision: “If the idea had just been to add more courses, then I think we would’ve called it Mario Kart 9.” The moving title scene is consistent with that broader world concept, though Nintendo has not published a specific developer explanation of how or why the title screen itself was designed.

How to check the version shown on your title screen
Nintendo Support lists Mario Kart World version 1.8.0, released September 9, 2026, as the latest update on its update-history page. The history also notes that an earlier update added the ability to display the software’s update version on the title screen; it does not identify the current character or scene shown there.
For Nintendo’s update instructions and version history, see How to Update Mario Kart World. The game is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, as noted in Play Nintendo’s overview.
