For original Switch, connect a compatible USB mouse to play with mouse controls; Nintendo does not name a particular model as guaranteed to work. On Switch 2, use Joy-Con 2’s mouse functionality. Nintendo describes that functionality as available in supported games, and says surface material can affect how it responds. Nintendo’s Mario Paint announcement explains the original Switch mouse requirement, while its Switch 2 launch announcement describes the Joy-Con 2 mouse feature and caveat.
Membership and availability
Nintendo announced Mario Paint for the Nintendo Switch Online Super NES collection on July 28, 2025. A Nintendo Switch Online membership and Nintendo Account are required for online features. The announcement’s relevant section does not specify a membership tier for this game, so check Nintendo’s current service information for your region before choosing a plan. Catalog availability and membership details may change.
This is the original 1992 Super Nintendo game made available through the service—not a newly developed Mario Paint title. Nintendo Life also reported the addition on July 29, 2025.

What you can do in Mario Paint
Mario Paint is a creative game, not merely a demonstration of mouse controls. Nintendo describes tools for drawing pictures in color, making animated sequences, composing music, and combining animation and music with artwork to create video sequences. The original game was released for Super Nintendo in 1992.
Nintendo Life’s contemporaneous report also notes the Coloring Book and Gnat Attack, a training game. It reports a soundtrack of 19 tracks with a total runtime of 28 minutes; Nintendo’s US announcement does not give a soundtrack count.

Which control option should you use?
- Choose Joy-Con 2 mouse controls if you have a Switch 2 and want to use its built-in mouse functionality for this supported game. Keep in mind that the surface can affect responsiveness.
- Use a compatible USB mouse if you have the original Switch. Nintendo says it is sold separately and does not endorse a specific model in its announcement.
The available Nintendo information establishes these input options, but does not show that a separate USB mouse is better than Joy-Con 2 mouse controls.
