Nintendo set a U.S. launch suggested retail price of $79.99 for both the physical and digital versions of Mario Kart World. The figure drew visible criticism in contemporary coverage, though no cited source measured how many fans objected. Nintendo executives defended setting prices game by game, based on what each title delivers.
How much did Mario Kart World cost at launch?
Nintendo’s April 18, 2025 U.S. announcement set the suggested retail price at $79.99 for either the physical or digital game. That was the launch MSRP, not a guarantee of what every retailer charged then or charges now. Nintendo’s announcement is available in its pricing statement.

Nintendo also listed the Switch 2 at $449.99 and a Switch 2 plus Mario Kart World bundle at $499.99. The bundle included a digital copy of the game. The $50 difference between those two system prices is not a standalone-game discount: the bundle requires buying the console, and its total is not directly comparable to the game-only MSRP.
Why did the price draw criticism?
Nintendo Life reported substantial consumer criticism of the $80 U.S. launch price and described fans as voicing displeasure. That supports saying the reveal prompted backlash, not that every Nintendo fan was furious. The coverage did not provide a representative poll, a count of critics, or evidence that the price changed sales or purchase intent. See Nintendo Life’s report.

The price also became a debate about how game value should be judged. Mario Kart World was announced as a Switch 2 exclusive for the console’s June 5, 2025 launch, with Grand Prix, Knockout Tour, Free Roam and Battle modes, an interconnected world, and races for up to 24 drivers. Those are concrete features, but they do not settle whether an individual player considers the price worthwhile. Nintendo outlined the game in its April 17, 2025 Direct announcement.
How did Nintendo explain its pricing?
Nintendo executives described a game-by-game approach rather than a single fixed price for all Switch 2 software. Bill Trinen, Nintendo of America’s vice president of product and player experience, told Nintendo Life: “I would say it’s less about the strategy of pricing Mario Kart World, it’s more just whenever we look at a given game, we just look at what is the experience, and what’s the content, and what’s the value?”

Nate Bihldorff, Nintendo of America’s senior vice president of development and planning, told ComicBook.com that prices would vary and that Nintendo would consider what each game delivers. He said: “You can see right out of the gate that there will be variance in prices for software. Of course with Mario Kart there will be further variance because you can get it as part of the bundle, which is retailing for $499 with the system. But yeah, I think the expectation is that we’ll set the price for each piece of software based on a number of factors, most of which is what’s delivered to consumers,” The comments explain Nintendo’s stated rationale; they do not show that players accepted it. No. It is the U.S. launch MSRP Nintendo announced in 2025. Retailers set their own prices, so a current offer can differ. Nintendo Support’s policy notice, reviewed October 8, 2026, adds another reason not to generalize the launch figure: beginning in May 2026, new Nintendo-published digital games exclusive to Switch 2 have MSRPs different from their physical versions. The notice does not say that Mario Kart World’s cited U.S. launch MSRP changed. See Nintendo Support’s Switch 2 game pricing notice.

Is Mario Kart World worth $80?
There is no objective answer established by the price announcement or the executive comments. The useful distinction is between the verified price and a personal value judgment: $79.99 was Nintendo’s U.S. launch MSRP for the standalone game in either format; whether its modes, world, and multiplayer appeal justify that outlay depends on what a buyer wants from it. The bundle changes the purchase equation only for someone who also wants a Switch 2.
