Nintendo plans to stop selling the original Switch family in Europe from mid-February 2027, but it is not shutting down the platform. The company says Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED production will continue through 2026 and the systems should be widely available in Europe that year. Nintendo also says existing games, accessories, eShop, Nintendo Switch Online, and other services will continue for the foreseeable future.
Is Nintendo discontinuing the Switch?
Nintendo is preparing a regional hardware sales wind-down, not a worldwide shutdown of Switch ownership or services. Its notice applies to Nintendo of Europe: from mid-February 2027, Nintendo plans to stop selling the Switch family to retailers and end sales through Nintendo Store in Europe. The notice does not establish a cutoff date for other regions. Nintendo’s Europe notice links the change to battery-related revisions to some products sold in Europe; it says the listed Switch models will not be replaced there by versions with user-replaceable batteries.

What happens during 2026?
Nintendo says production of Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED will continue through 2026, and that the systems should be widely available in Europe during the year. That is Nintendo’s stated production and availability plan, not a guarantee that every model will be in stock at every retailer.
What does the February 2027 date cover?
The planned cutoff concerns Nintendo of Europe sales to retailers and Nintendo Store sales in Europe. It is not a stated date for worldwide retail availability to end, for existing consoles to stop working, or for online services to close.

Will my Nintendo Switch still work after Switch 2?
Yes. Nintendo says owners can continue to use their existing games and accessories and access Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Switch Online, and other services for the foreseeable future. That wording is open-ended: Nintendo has not promised that support will last permanently or given a service end date. An existing Nintendo Switch Online membership can also be used on Switch 2. Does Switch 2 replace the original Switch?
Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025, making it the successor, but the two platforms are overlapping rather than changing over overnight. In its financial-results Q&A on May 8, 2026, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said “the ability of Nintendo Switch 2 to play Nintendo Switch software helped make transition easier.” Nintendo reported 19.86 million Switch 2 units sold through the end of the fiscal year ended March 2026 and forecast 16.5 million units for the fiscal year ending March 2027; the latter is a forecast, not a sales result. Can I still play Switch games on Switch 2?
Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but compatibility is not universal: Nintendo warns that some titles may not work or may not be fully compatible. Check Nintendo’s compatibility information for a specific game and consult its publisher for third-party titles.

Accessories and storage have limits
- Controllers: Selected original Switch controllers work wirelessly with Switch 2. Nintendo’s compatibility information is item-specific, so check the exact accessory rather than assuming every peripheral carries over.
- Dock: The original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2.
- microSD cards: Switch 2 is designed for microSD Express cards for game storage. A conventional microSD card can be used only to view captured Switch screenshots and videos, not to store Switch 2 games. Check Nintendo’s compatibility and storage details before relying on an old card or accessory.
Should you keep your Switch or move to Switch 2?
The decision depends on what you play and which features you need, not on the European sales timetable alone.
