They can point to different problems: Activision has documented both an inaccurate mastery display and individual challenge-tracking defects in Modern Warfare III (MWIII). The steps below use official MWIII examples; they are not a universal fix for every Modern Warfare game, mode, weapon, or platform.
Why are my mastery camo challenges not tracking?
A stuck-looking number does not by itself tell you whether the game failed to record progress. The cause may be an unmet weapon-specific prerequisite, a mismatch between the action and the exact challenge wording, an inaccurate summary display, or a game-side tracking defect.
Activision’s MWIII Season 2 patch notes, dated March 2024, say: “Resolved a visual bug in which progression for Weapon Mastery camo challenges was not displayed accurately.” The same notes describe fixes to particular challenge tracking conditions, including Gilded tracking for Marksman Rifles and Juggernaut Recon kills. These historical fixes establish that display and tracking defects have occurred; they do not identify the cause of a current player’s issue.
How to diagnose a stuck camo challenge
- Identify the exact challenge. Note the game (MWII or MWIII), mode (Multiplayer or Zombies), platform, weapon, camo tier, and the full requirement shown in-game. Camo paths and conditions differ across titles and modes.
- Verify the prerequisite. Check that the preceding camo requirement is actually satisfied, rather than relying only on a completion badge or summary. For example, Activision’s Known Issues page, shown as updated August 7, 2026, says the SOA Subverter’s Gilded progression requires completing the Dopamine Camo requirement of 15 Operator Headshots. The page notes that Dopamine can appear unlocked and complete; this is a specific SOA Subverter case, not a reason to repeat every lower-tier challenge.
- Compare the challenge counter with the mastery display. Check whether the specific challenge counter advances and whether the camo reward unlocks. If only the mastery summary looks wrong, that differs from a challenge counter that remains unchanged while the camo stays locked. The display alone cannot confirm which problem you have.
- Match the action to the right track. Read the challenge’s exact wording and confirm you are using the required weapon, mode, and condition. Use the camo track for your specific title and mode rather than borrowing a requirement from another Modern Warfare game.
- Check official issues, then report an unlisted problem. Activision’s MWIII support page links to Known Issues and Feedback and Bug Reporting. If the counter still does not advance after you meet the displayed conditions, include your title, platform, mode, weapon, camo tier, requirement, counter before and after a match, and whether the reward unlocks. Reporting does not guarantee a workaround or a particular resolution time.
Make sure you are following the right camo path
Modern Warfare camo names are not interchangeable between titles or modes. Activision’s official camo-system overview distinguishes the following tracks:

For MWIII Multiplayer, Weapon Mastery challenges attach to Completionist camos and offer emblems, calling cards, and a Completionist Charm. Requirements vary by weapon and mode, so the challenge shown in your game is the relevant one.
What if the challenge is complete but the camo will not unlock?
Check the named prerequisite and the unlock state separately. A completed-looking prior camo may not satisfy the next tier in a specific case: for the SOA Subverter, Activision’s Known Issues entry directs players to complete the 15 Operator Headshots required for Dopamine before Gilded progression begins. If that specific condition is satisfied and the next camo remains locked, check the current Known Issues page. If no listing covers it, submit a bug report with the details requested above.

What official patch history can—and cannot—tell you
MWIII’s launch notes also recorded a DM58 Priceless progress issue and a fix enabling Golden Enigma and Golden Ivory with non-blueprint weapons; the note said blueprint weapon completion was still under investigation at that time. A separate March 13 update addressed an SOA Subverter Priceless challenge. These are dated examples of game-side problems, not evidence that the same defects are active now or that they explain an unrelated challenge.
Official documentation supports checking prerequisites, separating the summary display from the underlying challenge counter, confirming the right game and mode, and reporting an unlisted tracking defect. It does not establish a generic controller, reinstall, cache-clearing, or hardware fix for camo progression.
