To use console commands in Europa Universalis V, launch the game with -debug_mode, then open the console with the key for your keyboard layout. The command list can change between patches, so use help, Tab autocomplete, or helplog in your installed build rather than assuming an online list is complete.
How do you enable console commands in Europa Universalis V?
EU5’s console is disabled by default. -debug_mode is a launch option: add it before starting the game, not as a command typed into a running session. The Grand Strategy Hub guide describes it as a Steam launch option rather than an in-game setting.

Steam
- Close Europa Universalis V if it is open.
- In Steam, open Library, right-click Europa Universalis V, and select Properties.
- Enter
-debug_modein Launch Options. - Start the game from Steam. The flag is read at launch, so changing this setting does not enable the console in a session that is already running.
Windows non-Steam installation
For Windows, the documented method is to find eu5.exe in the game’s binaries folder, create a shortcut, and add -debug_mode after the quoted executable path in the shortcut’s Target field. Launch EU5 using that shortcut. This procedure is specific to the Windows setup described in the Grand Strategy Hub guide and the Steam Community guide; equivalent steps for every storefront and operating system are not established here.
How do you open the EU5 console?
Load into a game and press the console key for your keyboard layout. Backtick/grave (`) or tilde (~) is common on US keyboards, but it is not universal. Guides also report alternatives such as Shift+2, Shift+3, section, caret, degree, superscript-two, Alt+C, and Shift+Alt+C; which key works can vary by layout and configuration. The Have You Played guide and Grand Strategy Hub guide list layout-dependent options.
#1 Best Overall
- Flexible Nation Building – decide on your type of government, the structure of your society, your trade politics and much, much more
- Highly detailed and interactive cities which are unique for each culture
- Use historical Ideas and recruit Great Men in order to make your country flourish the way you want it to
- Co-operative multiplayer over LAN or Internet
- If the console will not open, first confirm EU5 was launched with
-debug_mode. - If you added the flag while the game was open, fully exit and relaunch before trying other keys.
- If the flag is active but the usual key fails, try the key alternatives reported for your layout.
How do you find every working EU5 console command?
For the most relevant syntax, check the game itself. The available command references recommend help for general or command-specific guidance, Tab autocomplete to discover matching commands or parameters, and helplog to produce a command listing from the current build. See the Grand Strategy Hub guide and the EU5 Commands reference.
Online lists are useful for browsing, but they can lag behind updates or omit commands. The EU5 Commands reference notes that some information may be pre-release and that commands introduced in 1.3 may not be represented. Treat any static list as a starting point; the installed game’s help and autocomplete are better checks for names and arguments supported by your version.
Examples found in community command lists
The following examples are reported by guides, not guaranteed for every patch. Confirm spelling and arguments with the game before relying on them.
| Type | Reported examples | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Resources and country values | cash, Manpower, Sailors, Stability, Prestige, Inflation, WarExhaustion, ArmyTradition, NavyTradition, GovernmentPower |
Examples listed in the Have You Played guide; exact accepted syntax may vary by build. |
| Events | event [eventid] [target] |
Reported event-command form in the Have You Played guide; check the installed game for valid IDs and arguments. |
| Behavior toggles | InstantMove, InstantSiege, YesMan, NoMan, NoRandom, FastDiplo |
Reported examples in the Have You Played guide; availability and effects should be confirmed in game. |
| Other reported commands | annex [<CountryTag>], estate_satisfaction |
Listed in the Steam Community guide; use in-game help or autocomplete to verify current syntax. |
The EU5 Commands reference also lists utility commands including help, helplog, version, time, save, load, observe, screenshot, and clear. It describes debug_mode as a session toggle that can turn debug mode off; the same reference says the console cannot then be re-enabled until a restart. Because behavior can change, verify this in the build you are playing before using it as a recovery method.
Do EU5 console commands disable achievements?
A June 9, 2026 guide by Have You Played reports that achievements are disabled while -debug_mode is active. It recommends removing the launch flag, disabling active mods, and relaunching before returning to achievement play, and says to check the main-menu checksum for the relevant patch. The guide is not an official Paradox support statement, and achievement eligibility may depend on the version and save. Check the game’s own eligibility indicators rather than assuming that removing the flag restores an existing save’s status.
If you want to experiment, use a disposable or copied save. Do not assume a save used with debug mode becomes eligible for achievements again just because you later remove the launch option.
Quick Recap
Which method should you use?
| Need | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Enable debug mode on Steam | Steam Library → Europa Universalis V → Properties → Launch Options | The game reads -debug_mode when it starts. |
| Enable debug mode in a Windows non-Steam setup | Shortcut to eu5.exe with -debug_mode appended to the target |
This is the Windows non-Steam procedure described by the cited guides; other platform procedures are not established. |
| Find syntax for the installed patch | help, Tab autocomplete, or helplog |
These query the game build in use, unlike a static web list that may be outdated. |
| Browse examples before launching | A command reference or community guide | Useful for orientation, but confirm command names and parameters in game. |
