In December 2023, some Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III players reported that enemy footsteps sounded muffled, silent, or difficult to locate—even when they could hear teammates. Those accounts describe player experiences, not a confirmed universal bug. Separately, Sledgehammer Games later documented a deliberate reduction in multiplayer footstep volume, making game balance another part of the story.
What players reported about MWIII footsteps
Contemporary coverage on December 11, 2023 described players struggling to hear or pinpoint approaching enemies. Some said footsteps seemed “too muffled or completely silent”; others reported hearing teammates but not enemies. One player put the frustration bluntly: “I’m done with the audio in this game.” These are reported experiences, not proof that every player or platform had the same problem. PiunikaWeb’s report also relayed an acknowledgment that developers were investigating; the report is the available basis for that acknowledgment here.
What the official updates changed
Season 1: puddle footsteps and Bone Conduction Headset
The January 30, 2024 Season 1 patch notes say footstep audio was improved for players walking on puddle surfaces. They also describe the in-game Bone Conduction Headset gear as reducing combat and environmental sounds to help players focus on other footsteps. That gear is a loadout item, not a physical headset recommendation.
Season 2: Ninja Vest
The March 21, 2024 Season 2 patch notes say the Ninja Vest eliminates the wearer’s footstep sounds. That mechanic can explain why some movement is inaudible in a match; it is distinct from a playback problem affecting a player’s audio setup.

Season 4: a deliberate reduction in footstep volume
On July 9, 2024, Sledgehammer Games said its Design and Audio teams had “decreased the volume of all footstep types (walk, sprint, and tac-sprint)” to encourage more diverse use of Boots perks. The notes explain that Covert Sneakers remained far ahead of other Boots in pick rate despite earlier perk changes, but give no numerical pick-rate figure. This is a documented multiplayer balance decision, not evidence that every muffled-footstep complaint was caused by that change. Read the Season 4 notes.

- Reported audio symptoms: Players described enemy footsteps as muffled, inaudible, or hard to locate.
- Game design and loadouts: The official notes document reduced footstep volume, while perks and gear affect how footsteps are heard or suppressed.
- Individual setup and preferences: Audio mix, playback device, platform, and personal settings can affect perceived clarity.
The official update record cited here runs through July 2024. A June 2025 third-party settings guide does not establish whether a later official update changed or resolved multiplayer footstep audio, so the current status cannot be confirmed from these sources.
Settings to try before changing hardware
Test the reported Windows workaround cautiously
A December 2023 community workaround described enabling Loudness Equalization for the Windows playback device and changing MWIII’s Audio Mix to PC Speakers. The guide described opening Windows Sound settings, selecting the playback device, going into its properties, enabling Loudness Equalization and choosing “Short,” then changing the in-game mix. The report cautions that results may not be as intended. This is community advice, not an official fix or a guaranteed solution.

Adjust one setting at a time
A June 16, 2025 ONE Esports settings guide suggests keeping effects prominent while reducing music and other nonessential sounds. Its suggested starting values include master game volume 80–100, gameplay music 0, effects 100, cinematic music 0, war tracks 0, and voice chat 20. The guide notes that preferences are subjective; these values are not a verified fix. Try one change at a time in your own setup, compare the result, and restore the previous setting if clarity gets worse.

The cited reports do not show that buying a headset, DAC, sound card, amplifier, or cable fixes the issue. The official notes point to game-side audio and balance decisions, and the workaround concerns software configuration. Check settings and in-game mechanics before spending money; the Bone Conduction Headset mentioned in the patch notes is an in-game item, not hardware.
