Why Nintendo’s Switch 2 Has Me Bracing for Disappointment

Switch 2 is selling, but its higher entry cost makes the software lineup, game compatibility and hardware improvements more important to your buying decision.

Switch 2 may be selling well, but that does not guarantee it will feel worth the price to every player. The case for tempering expectations is about value: Nintendo’s own president acknowledged that a hardware price revision raised the barrier to entry, making the console’s software lineup and compatibility more important to a buyer’s decision.

Why the price makes expectations harder to meet

Nintendo of America listed the Switch 2 at a US suggested retail price of $449.99 at launch in 2025, or $499.99 in a bundle with Mario Kart World. Those are historical launch prices, not a statement of current pricing. At the time, Nintendo also listed Mario Kart World at $79.99 and Donkey Kong Bananza at $69.99. A buyer weighing the system therefore has to consider the cost of the games they actually want, not just the console. Nintendo of America’s launch announcement provides those US figures.

There has since been a hardware price revision. In Nintendo’s May 2026 fiscal-year results Q&A, president Shuntaro Furukawa said, “I will not discuss the specifics of how this price revision could impact Nintendo Switch 2 sales, but we recognize that this raises the barrier for entry to a certain extent for people deciding whether to make a purchase.” That is a more solid reason to pause than speculation about whether the console is popular: Nintendo itself acknowledged the added purchase barrier. The Q&A does not specify a current price for every market, so check the price where you live before deciding. Nintendo’s May 2026 Q&A.

Game costs can also vary by format. Nintendo says that, beginning in May 2026, new Nintendo-published digital titles exclusive to Switch 2 have an MSRP different from their physical versions. The company attributes the distinction to format production and distribution costs and says it gives players more choice. That does not mean digital is always cheaper: compare the digital and physical price for each game in your region. Nintendo’s Switch 2 game-pricing information.

Does the software justify buying now?

At a higher entry cost, the useful question is not whether Switch 2 has games, but whether its current and upcoming games are ones you want enough to justify owning the system. Furukawa put the burden on Nintendo’s software value, saying, “That being said, the most important thing in our dedicated video game platform business is to offer engaging fun that is worth more than the price.” That is the right standard for a prospective buyer, but it is not a promise that every player will find the lineup compelling.

Nintendo’s own reporting offers a meaningful counterpoint to the concern. In the May 2026 Q&A, the company said Switch 2 hardware sell-through increased after Pokémon Pokopia launched in March and described sales as favorable entering the fiscal year. Furukawa said Nintendo believes major titles have historically lifted hardware sales and expects that pattern to continue. This supports the view that compelling releases can strengthen demand; it does not settle whether the releases you care about justify the cost.

Nintendo also said approximately 40% of Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream players were Switch 2 owners. That company-reported figure concerns that game’s player group, not all Switch 2 owners or the proportion of players satisfied with the hardware. It is evidence of engagement across the two platforms, not a satisfaction survey. Nintendo’s May 2026 Q&A.

Strong sales do not answer whether owners are disappointed

Nintendo reported more than 3.5 million Switch 2 units sold globally during the first four days after launch, describing it at the time as the fastest-selling Nintendo game system. That is a company-reported launch figure from June 2025, not a measure of how owners feel about the console after buying it. Nintendo of America’s launch report.

The Associated Press reported that Nintendo’s figures showed 3.82 million Switch 2 machines sold globally in the quarter covered by its August 6, 2026 results report. Nintendo projected 16.5 million hardware sales for the fiscal year through March 2027. The projection is a company forecast, not completed sales; AP also noted that console sales tend to fall after the first strong year. This context can support an expectation of a more normalized sales pace, but neither the quarterly figure nor the forecast establishes widespread disappointment or a failing platform. Check the games you already own before upgrading

Switch 2 plays existing Switch games, but Nintendo cautions that some titles may not be supported or fully compatible. The compatibility approach is not simply a matter of Switch 2 containing the original Switch’s hardware: Nintendo developers explain that it does not, and that its approach differs from older systems that used hardware components to enable compatibility. If you are upgrading around a particular game, check Nintendo’s title-level compatibility information rather than assuming it will work exactly as it did on your original system. What the hardware changes are worth to you

Nintendo’s June 2025 announcement describes a larger screen, improved processing and graphics, and magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers with mouse functionality. These are real changes to the system, but their value depends on what you play and how you play: performance and display improvements may matter more to someone who regularly uses handheld mode or wants newer games to run on the new hardware than to someone satisfied with their Switch library and current setup. Mouse functionality is a specialized benefit, not a reason every player needs to upgrade. Nintendo’s Switch 2 announcement.

Existing original Switch Joy-Con and Pro Controller can be used with Switch 2, according to Nintendo developers. That may help avoid replacing controllers you already own. The new Switch 2 Pro Controller adds rear GL/GR buttons and a headset audio jack; those features matter to the ownership budget only if you want them. Buy now or wait?

  • Consider buying now if a Switch 2 game you specifically want is available, the price in your market fits your budget, and the hardware improvements matter to your play.
  • Wait if you are mainly upgrading for an unspecified promise of future games, are content with your original Switch, or need to confirm compatibility for games you rely on.
  • Work out the full cost by checking the current local system price and the prices of the games you plan to buy. Compare formats title by title; Nintendo says new digital exclusives may have a different MSRP from physical versions in the US beginning in May 2026.

The disappointment risk is not that Nintendo has failed to sell the console. It is that a higher purchase barrier raises the standard the software and features must meet for each individual buyer. Nintendo is reporting favorable sales and sees major releases as a driver, but whether that momentum becomes enough value for you depends on the games, compatibility, and improvements you will actually use.
