A world that works on your home network but not for an outside player is especially useful evidence: the game and server are probably healthy, while the failure is in firewall, NAT, addressing, or the ISP path.

Diagnose from the inside out. Confirm edition and version, verify accounts and permissions, prove that the server accepts a local connection, then check the exact address, port, firewall rule, router forwarding, and Internet path. The steps below apply to Java Edition, Bedrock Edition, and Bedrock Dedicated Server, with the differences called out where they matter.

Start by identifying the failure layer
Do not begin by changing random router settings. A Minecraft connection has several independent layers, and each layer must work before the next one matters.
- Game compatibility: The player and server must use the same edition and a compatible, fully released version.
- Server process: The host must be running the correct server software, with the intended world loaded and listening on the configured port.
- Local network: A client on the same computer or home network must be able to reach the host.
- Internet path: An outside player must reach the home’s public address, pass the router’s NAT rule, and reach the host firewall.
- Account and platform access: Sign-in status, multiplayer settings, child-account controls, and console online subscriptions must permit multiplayer.
A failure at an earlier layer makes tests at later layers misleading. For example, port forwarding cannot repair an outdated client, and a public-address test cannot prove that the server process loaded its world correctly.

1. Match Java or Bedrock, then match the released version
Everyone must use the same edition
Java Edition clients do not join a Bedrock server directly, and Bedrock clients do not join a Java server directly. Cross-edition play requires a separate compatibility bridge; without one, an address and port that are otherwise correct will still fail.
Ask every participant which edition they launched, not which device they use. A Windows computer can run either edition, while consoles and mobile devices normally run Bedrock. The server owner should state the edition and the exact version before anyone troubleshoots networking.
Use a released build on both sides
Minecraft’s official server guide says the version being played needs to be the same version that the server is running. Switch snapshot, preview, or beta clients back to the latest fully released patch supported by the server. A client that is only one patch away can still fail because protocol numbers may differ.
Bedrock Dedicated Server reports these mismatches as Outdated Client or Outdated Server. Update the side named by the message, close and relaunch the game, and restart the dedicated server after replacing its files. Do not assume that a small point release is wire-compatible; compare the complete version shown in the launcher or server console.
Record the versions before changing anything else
- Write down Java or Bedrock for each player.
- Record the server software edition and its complete released version.
- Disable preview or snapshot enrollment temporarily.
- Restart the server after an update so its process is no longer using old protocol files.
2. Check accounts, hosting state, and platform permissions
Make sure the host is present
A hosted single-player world opened to friends is available only while its owner is in that world. A dedicated server must have its process running and its world fully started. If the owner’s computer sleeps, loses power, or closes the server window, every remote join will fail regardless of the router configuration.

Verify Bedrock sign-in and world settings
Bedrock players should be signed in to the Microsoft account that owns the profile. In the world’s multiplayer settings, enable multiplayer and confirm that invitations or friend access are allowed. Child accounts can have family controls that block multiplayer even when the game itself launches normally; the family organizer must permit the required online features.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck console online access
Console players may need the platform’s paid online-multiplayer subscription. A missing subscription can look like a server problem because the player can see the game but cannot complete the join request. Have the console account holder verify subscription status and privacy settings before changing server files.
3. Prove that the server works on the host or LAN
Watch the server console while testing
Keep the server console visible and attempt a join. A successful attempt should create a connection or player-login entry; a startup error, missing world, bind failure, or immediate disconnect points to the server itself rather than the Internet. Look for messages that identify the listening address and port, and check that the process remains running after the world loads.
Test from the host machine
Use the host’s local address and the configured port. If the game and server run on the same Windows computer with Bedrock Dedicated Server, Microsoft documents a loopback restriction that can prevent the game from reaching the local server. Apply the documented loopback exemption, or skip the special case by testing from another device on the same LAN.
Test from a second device on the same network
Find the server computer’s private address in the router or operating-system network details. Private addresses commonly begin with 192.168., 10., or 172.16 through 172.31. Enter that address in the appropriate multiplayer screen and include a non-default port when the server uses one.

If no local device can join, stop working on port forwarding. Inspect the server process, its bind address, the world’s startup log, the configured port, and the host firewall first. If LAN succeeds but an outside friend fails, the server and local path are proven; continue to the Internet checks.
4. Use the correct connection screen, address, and port
Java Edition
Use Multiplayer → Direct Connection or Add Server. Enter the server address supplied by the owner. If the owner specifies a port, append it in the format hostname:port. Java has no single port that is correct for every server: the router rule, host firewall rule, and client address must all match the port in the server configuration.
Bedrock Edition
Use Play → Servers → Add Server and enter the address and port in their separate fields when that interface is shown. A friend outside the home must use the owner’s current public address or a hostname that resolves to it, not the private LAN address.

- Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!
5. Check Bedrock authentication and the allow list
Keep online authentication enabled for public servers
Bedrock Dedicated Server uses online-mode=true by default, and Microsoft recommends that setting for Internet-facing servers. It requires players to authenticate instead of allowing unauthenticated identities that could impersonate another account. Changing it can create security and identity problems, so do not use it as a casual connection fix.
Distinguish an allow-list rejection from a network failure
When allow-list=true, only names on allowlist.json may join. Add each player’s exact Xbox Gamertag, including capitalization and spacing as displayed by the account, or run /allowlist add <GamerTag> from the server console. An allow-list rejection means the server was reached; it is not evidence that port forwarding failed.
6. Allow the server through the host firewall
Microsoft states that a system firewall such as Windows Defender must allow at least one route through the firewall for players on other machines to connect. Create a narrow inbound rule for the server executable or the exact configured port and protocol, on the network profile the host is actually using.
Windows checks
- Confirm the server process is running under the expected account.
- Open the firewall’s allowed-app or inbound-rule settings.
- Allow the server executable, or create an inbound rule for the configured Minecraft port.
- Apply the rule to the active private or public profile as appropriate; do not enable every port indiscriminately.
- Retry from a second LAN device before testing from the Internet.
Security suites and antivirus products can maintain a second firewall. Review their event logs if the operating-system rule appears correct. Temporarily disabling protection is a diagnostic step only; restore it immediately and keep the least-permissive rule that works.
VPN and custom DNS
A VPN can change the route, bind the server to a virtual adapter, or prevent inbound traffic. Disconnect it briefly while testing, then reconnect it if it is required and configure an explicit server route. Custom DNS can also direct a hostname to an old address; test with the current numeric address first.

7. Fix router NAT, port forwarding, and double NAT
Create a forwarding rule to the correct private address
In the router’s port-forwarding or NAT section, forward the exact server port and protocol to the server computer’s current private IP. A DHCP lease can change that IP, silently sending traffic to another device. Reserve the address for the host or assign a suitable static address, then verify the rule still targets it.
Use the same protocol the server requires. Bedrock traffic is commonly tested over UDP, while Java server configurations generally use TCP; follow the server’s documented requirement and your actual configuration rather than opening both protocols without a reason.
Give friends the public address, not a LAN address
Outside players must use the public address assigned to the home connection. Addresses beginning with 192.168., 10., or 172.16–172.31 are private and work only inside the local network. If your public address changes, an old saved address will stop working; update friends or use a properly configured dynamic-DNS hostname.
Recognize double NAT and CGNAT
Compare the router’s WAN address with the public address shown by an independent external address service. If they differ, another router or the ISP may be performing upstream NAT. Carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT) can place many customers behind one public address and prevent unsolicited inbound forwarding. Ask the ISP whether inbound hosting is supported and whether a public IPv4 address or bridge mode is available. If it is not, use a hosted or tunnel solution designed for game servers instead of repeatedly changing the home router.
Test the real service from outside
Do not treat a successful ping as proof that Minecraft is reachable. ICMP ping and a Minecraft TCP or UDP service are different tests, and many networks block ping while allowing the game—or the reverse. Test the actual configured port from a phone hotspot, a friend’s network, or another connection outside the host’s LAN while the server is running.

8. Read the symptom before choosing the fix
| Symptom | Most likely layer | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Outdated Client or Outdated Server | Protocol/version mismatch | Update the side named by the message to the same released version and restart. |
| Server is absent from the local test | Process, bind, port, or host firewall | Read the console, verify the listening port, and test from another LAN device. |
| LAN works; Internet player times out | NAT, forwarding, public address, firewall, VPN, or ISP path | Check the host IP reservation, forwarding rule, WAN/public-address match, and external-port test. |
| Connection reaches the server but player is rejected | Authentication, allow list, or account permissions | Check sign-in, online-mode, allow-list, exact Gamertag, and family/console settings. |
| Only one player cannot join | That player’s edition, version, account, network, or subscription | Repeat the edition/version and account checks for that player, then test another network. |
9. Choose the right way to host
| Option | Network work | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| LAN or Open to LAN | No Internet forwarding; same network and local firewall still matter | Players in one home or local network | Not reachable from the wider Internet. |
| Self-hosted Java or Bedrock server | Host firewall, router NAT/forwarding, address management, updates, and security maintenance | Owners who want control and are comfortable administering a server | Most troubleshooting and exposure responsibility. |
| Minecraft Realms | Minimal home-network setup | Friends who want a private online world without configuring forwarding | Subscription service with fewer self-hosting controls. |
Minecraft’s official guide describes Realms as a way to set up an online server that friends can connect to and recommends it when home-network changes are undesirable. Self-hosting remains practical when the ISP permits inbound traffic and the owner is willing to maintain updates, backups, firewall rules, and account security.
10. A repeatable repair checklist
- Write down whether each person uses Java or Bedrock.
- Confirm every client and the server use the same fully released version; leave preview and snapshot builds.
- Verify the host is online, the world loaded, and the server console stays running.
- Check Microsoft-account sign-in, Bedrock multiplayer settings, child-account controls, and console online subscriptions.
- Join from the host or another LAN device using the host’s private address.
- Read
server.properties; record the actual port,online-mode, andallow-listvalues. - For an allow-listed Bedrock server, add each exact Gamertag to
allowlist.jsonor use/allowlist add <GamerTag>. - Permit the server executable or exact port through the host firewall and any security-suite firewall.
- Reserve the host’s private IP and forward the exact port and protocol to it.
- Give outside players the current public address and specified port, never the private LAN address.
- Test from outside the home network while the server is running; do not rely on ping.
- If the router WAN address differs from the public address, investigate double NAT or CGNAT with the ISP.
- If inbound hosting is unavailable, move the world to Realms or another supported hosted/tunnel arrangement.
Once a connection works, document the edition, server version, port, private-IP reservation, firewall rule, and public hostname. That record turns the next outage into a short verification exercise instead of a full rebuild.
