As reproduced by GamesRadar+, Uematsu explained that more developed visuals made a highly catchy melody more likely to compete with gameplay and the story.
What did Uematsu say about the original Final Fantasy VII soundtrack?
GamesRadar+ reported on October 7, 2026, that Uematsu described most of the original game’s songs as “boring compared to the music in prior games,” while singling out fan favorites such as “One-Winged Angel” as exceptions. That is a reported comparison with his earlier work—not an objective rating of the score or evidence of what listeners generally think.

The same report reproduces Uematsu’s explanation: “Because of the improvements in the visuals, the music distracts from the gameplay if the melody is too catchy.” It also quotes him saying, “So I wrote music that doesn’t impose on the focus for the story.” In other words, he says he held back the music’s attention-grabbing quality so it would leave room for the game’s other elements.
Why would a composer make the music less prominent?
Uematsu’s reported reasoning is about the role music plays alongside visuals, gameplay, and narrative. If a melody is especially catchy, it can draw a player’s attention away from what is happening on screen. He says he wanted the score to support the story rather than compete with it.

That rationale does not establish that every track was intentionally subdued, nor does it mean the soundtrack lacks memorable music. The claim is narrower: Uematsu retrospectively compared most of the songs unfavorably with earlier entries and connected his compositional choices to the need not to impose on the game’s focus.
Where does the quotation come from?
GamesRadar+ attributes the remarks to Uematsu in Nobuo Uematsu: On the Record, a biography by veteran game journalist James Mielke. VIZ Media’s publisher listing describes the book as drawing on conversations with Uematsu, his wife, peers, and industry figures, and provides a preview. The public publisher and distributor listings identify a hardcover edition published September 15, 2026, at 286 pages, ISBN 9781974769407: see VIZ Media and Simon & Schuster. Uematsu’s later Final Fantasy VII music credits
The reported comment is about the original 1997 soundtrack, not a verdict on later scores. Uematsu continued to contribute to music associated with the series: Square Enix credits him with writing “Hollow,” the Final Fantasy VII Remake theme performed by Yosh, and PlayStation identifies him as the composer of Rebirth’s “No Promises to Keep,” performed by Loren Allred. These are specific credits, not evidence that he composed every piece in either game’s score.
