Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition is a substantial update to the PC game, not just a bundle of its expansions: SEGA says it adds modernized controls, display and accessibility options, visual updates, more playable minor factions, and integrated Mod.io support. It also brings together the original Sengoku Jidai campaign with Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai. But as of October 12, 2026, the edition had not yet launched, so claims about how smoothly those changes work, or whether they make the game better in practice, remain unverified.
What is Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition?
SEGA describes it as an updated PC version of Total War: SHOGUN 2 with its downloadable content in one package. The publisher says the three campaigns span more than 700 years of Japanese history, from the rise of the first Shogun to the fall of the last Samurai. That breadth changes the feel of the game as well as its timeline: the original campaign centers on the Sengoku Jidai, Rise of the Samurai is set during the Genpei War, and Fall of the Samurai follows the Boshin War and the clash between tradition and industrialization.

What is new beyond the DLC bundle?
The announced changes target both presentation and day-to-day usability. SEGA says the update improves visuals, lighting, shadows, textures, models, fog, and other environmental effects, and redesigns the user interface. It also lists modernized controls, UI scaling for 1440p and 4K, ultrawide support, colorblind accessibility options, and an optional woodblock-inspired animated-cutscene style. Japanese and Chinese voice and full-text localizations are also included, alongside a 64-bit upgrade.
#1 Best Overall
- Choose from 9 different clans and compete online and offline for the undisputed supremacy of Medieval Japan
- Play through the Main Campaign in single player or invite a friend online to play competitively or cooperatively in Campaign Multiplayer mode
- Developed according to Sun Tzu's principles in the Art of War, the Artificial Intelligence constantly analyzes its situation
- Build and govern cities, recruit and train troops, conduct diplomacy and manage your agents
- Improved land and naval battle gameplay, now with the ability to combine forces and attacks
These additions address understandable friction points for a game first released in 2011, especially on higher-resolution or ultrawide screens. However, a feature list cannot establish whether the interface is clearer in use, whether controls feel better, or how the upgrade affects performance and stability on individual PCs. Those questions require post-launch experience.
More playable factions and three campaign eras
SEGA says more than 50 previously unplayable minor factions become playable. Combined with the three campaigns, that could offer a broader set of starts and historical contexts than the original release. The count and campaign range are announced features; they do not by themselves show how balanced, distinct, or replayable the new options will be.

What the historical range means
The campaigns are not three versions of the same battlefield. The base game represents the Sengoku Jidai, while Rise of the Samurai moves back to the Genpei War and Fall of the Samurai advances to the Boshin War. The latter’s traditional-versus-industrial conflict gives the package a particularly different military setting, but the quality of that contrast in the updated edition has not yet been independently assessed.

The Complete Edition’s improvements may make an established favorite easier to play on modern hardware, but there is not yet enough evidence to call it a better game in practice. PC Gamer’s September 2026 announcement coverage described the original as widely considered one of the best Total War games and singled out Fall of the Samurai. GamesRadar+ ranked the original fourth in its 2025 selection of the best Total War games, praising its compact scope, clear unit roles, and castle sieges, as well as the expansion’s contrast between industrial-era guns and traditional forces. Those are outlet judgments about the original game, not reviews of the Complete Edition.

- Developed according to Sun Tzu's principles in the Art of War, the Artificial Intelligence constantly analyzes its situation and reacts to your every move with greater precision and variety.
- A streamlined User Interface makes management of your kingdom much easier. Build and govern cities, recruit and train troops, conduct diplomacy and manage your agents - each feature is now introduced with comprehensive tutorials
Steam’s original-game page showed 92% positive from 21,929 English reviews and 77% positive from 312 recent reviews when accessed October 12, 2026. These are changing snapshots for the original game, not the new edition. Steam says it excludes review periods it identifies as off-topic from its score calculation. The figures provide context for the original’s reception, but cannot tell you whether the update ships cleanly or whether its changes suit you.
Should existing mod users switch?
Compatibility is the clearest reason an established player might prefer to keep using the original version. SEGA says the Complete Edition launches with integrated Mod.io support, but mods made for the original SHOGUN 2 are not compatible with the Complete Edition. Mods for the original remain unchanged. If a particular mod setup is important to your campaigns, weigh that against the new edition’s announced interface and compatibility features before switching.

| Buyer or storefront | What SEGA says is included | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| New Steam buyer | The Complete Edition purchase also includes the original SHOGUN 2 and its associated DLC, except the Blood Pack, which is excluded for age-rating reasons. | This is the broadest stated Steam package if you want both the updated edition and original game. |
| Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, or GOG buyer | The Complete Edition only. | Do not assume the original game and its DLC are bundled on these storefronts. |
| Existing Steam owner of the original | SEGA says owners receive original DLC they do not already own for free, plus a time-limited 75% discount on the Complete Edition. | The FAQ gives the offer period as October 13, 2026, at 16:00 BST through November 12, 2026, at 16:00 GMT. Confirm eligibility and the price shown on your account before purchase. |
SEGA says the original game remains playable, and existing owners’ copies remain unchanged. Its standalone Steam sale listing ended September 28, 2026; the FAQ says new Steam buyers instead get the game and DLC through the Complete Edition. Best Value
- The American, British and French nations played an important part in the story of the Boshin war and your relations with these foreign powers will be integral to unit recruitment and to advancing your technology trees.
- Thirty nine new land units, including modern ranged units - such as the Gatling gun and Armstrong gun - controllable in a new third-person mode.
- New port siege battle type, this new battle type triggers when attempting a naval assault on an occupied enemy port. The attacking fleet must sail into the harbour and capture the port, running the gauntlet of coastal gun defences.
- New land and sea unit interactions, during a land battle, armies can call in offshore artillery support barrages.
- Campaign map bombardments: offshore naval units can bombard armies and cities in adjacent coastal areas on the campaign map itself.
What can be concluded before launch?
The announced package has a strong premise: three campaigns across distinct eras, more than 50 additional playable minor factions, and a substantial set of technical and interface updates. That is enough to explain why returning players may be interested, but not enough to verify the practical quality of the update. The Complete Edition had not launched at the time of SEGA’s October 12, 2026 announcement information, so there is no supported basis here for claims about bugs, balance, smoothness, or final value.
One scale figure is easy to misread: SEGA reported 48.3 million cumulative copies sold for the Total War series in 2026. That is not a sales figure for SHOGUN 2, preorders, or the Complete Edition.
