Markus “Notch” Persson was not invited to Minecraft’s tenth-anniversary event in 2019, according to contemporaneous reporting. A Microsoft spokesperson told Ars Technica that Persson’s online comments and opinions “do not reflect those of Microsoft or Mojang, and are not representative of Minecraft.”
What happened at Minecraft’s 10th-anniversary event?
Mojang planned a press event at its Stockholm studio for May 17, 2019, marking ten years of Minecraft. Ars Technica reported on April 29 that Persson would not attend and that his absence was a deliberate choice. The report attributed the decision’s explanation to an unnamed Microsoft spokesperson; it did not identify who personally made the decision. Ars Technica’s April 2019 report

What did Microsoft say about Notch’s absence?
As quoted by Ars Technica, a Microsoft spokesperson said Persson’s online comments and opinions “do not reflect those of Microsoft or Mojang, and are not representative of Minecraft.” That is the company’s reported rationale for excluding him from the anniversary event; the available account is not an original Microsoft announcement and does not name the spokesperson.
What online conduct was cited in the reporting?
Ars Technica characterized some of Persson’s public posts and endorsements as racist, homophobic, or transphobic, and cited examples as context for the decision. Those descriptions are the outlet’s characterization of the reported posts, not a separate adjudication. The article also noted that some posts had been deleted.

How does this relate to Minecraft’s community standards?
Minecraft’s current Community Standards affirm the Xbox Community Standards and emphasize inclusion, diversity, and safety, including the principle “Hate has no place here.” These public-facing principles provide context for Minecraft’s stated community values, but they do not establish the private deliberations behind the 2019 event decision.
In a 2020 article, Mojang discussed moderation tools for online messages and specified multiplayer spaces, distinguishing those spaces from single-player content, which it said was not moderated. That article is historical policy context, not a complete statement of current moderation policy. Mojang’s 2020 moderation article

What is known about Persson’s relationship with Minecraft?
Ars Technica reported that Persson sold Minecraft and the company he built to Microsoft in 2014 for $2.5 billion. The 2019 report also said his name remained in the game’s credits at that time. Neither detail establishes his current relationship with Mojang or the state of the credits today.
