Why Owen Mahoney Stepped Down as Nexon CEO After a Decade

Owen Mahoney said he chose to hand over Nexon’s leadership after ten years while the company was doing well and had a successor bench ready.

Owen Mahoney stepped down as Nexon’s CEO as part of a planned succession, not because the available public evidence points to a forced exit or a performance crisis. Nexon said his term would end at its March 2024 shareholders’ meeting and named NEXON Korea CEO Junghun Lee as his successor. Mahoney later explained that he wanted to hand over leadership while the company was doing well and had a strong successor bench.

What Nexon formally announced

On November 9, 2023, Nexon said Mahoney would retire as representative director, president and CEO when his term ended at the company’s 22nd Annual General Meeting of Shareholders in March 2024. The board selected Junghun Lee, then a Nexon director and CEO of NEXON Korea, to succeed him. Mahoney was to remain a director and senior adviser to the CEO, but without representative rights. Nexon’s succession announcement describes a term-completion handoff rather than an immediate departure from the company.

Why Mahoney said the timing made sense

In a November 2023 interview with GamesBeat, Mahoney framed the decision as a question of succession planning and corporate governance. “Ten years is a very long time to be CEO,” he told Dean Takahashi. He said companies should plan for long-term shareholder returns, build a strong bench of successors and make leadership changes while the business is doing well, rather than waiting until it is struggling. His interview is the clearest public account of his reasoning for the timing.

Mahoney also described Nexon’s then-current conditions positively, citing a seventh consecutive quarter of double-digit year-over-year growth and a strong game pipeline. Those were his comments in November 2023, not a standalone explanation from Nexon that a particular result triggered the transition. His stated point was that a strong period offered a better moment for a planned handoff.

Why Junghun Lee was chosen

Nexon’s announcement said Lee had spent 20 years in the Nexon group and had experience in strategy and management. A related company announcement said NEXON Korea revenue grew at a 19% compound annual growth rate from 2018 to 2022 under Lee’s direction. That figure applies specifically to NEXON Korea and that period; it provides context for Lee’s background, not evidence that the growth statistic caused Mahoney to leave. Nexon’s announcement about Lee gives the company’s account of his record.

How the transition concluded

Nexon’s FY2023 shareholder letter later described Mahoney’s 13 years at the company: three as CFO and ten as CEO. It credited his leadership with expanding Nexon into new markets and platforms, and Mahoney called his time there rewarding while welcoming the next generation of leadership. In March 2024, he wrote, “Both professionally and personally, my time at Nexon has been enormously rewarding.” The shareholder letter offers a retrospective, while Nexon’s current company profile lists Lee as president and CEO from 2024.

What the public explanation does—and does not—establish

The formal announcement establishes that Nexon tied the change to the end of Mahoney’s term, selected a successor and planned for Mahoney to stay on in an advisory and director role without representative authority. Mahoney’s interview supplies his explanation for choosing that moment: long-term succession planning, shareholder governance, a prepared bench and confidence in the company’s condition.

The cited public statements do not identify a private motive beyond that explanation, nor do they say he was forced out or that a scandal or performance crisis prompted the change. The most precise answer is that Mahoney described a deliberate succession while Nexon was doing well, and Nexon implemented it at the scheduled end of his term.
