Mechabellum crashes on PC do not share one cause, and no single fix works for everyone. Searches like “Mechabellum keeps crashing,” “crash on startup,” “crashes to desktop,” and “crashes during a match” describe different failures, so the first job is to pin down exactly when and how the game stops. The developer has published one specific fix, for the “Failed to load il2cpp” launch error. The other steps below are diagnostic checks or community suggestions, not guaranteed cures. Start with the cheap checks, and collect evidence before you change system settings.
Step 1: Classify the crash before changing anything
Write down four things: the stage where the failure happens, whether only the game closes or Windows also fails, the exact error text (if any), and whether it repeats. The table below shows how those answers separate the common patterns.
| Pattern | Typical stage | Scope | Evidence to save | Start with |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Launch error | Before the main menu | Game only | Exact dialog text, such as “Failed to load il2cpp” | Step 2 |
| Loading failure | While the game loads | Game only | Player.log and its timestamp | Steps 4 and 5 |
| Match crash | During a match | Game only, or Windows too | Time, game mode, graphics settings, any event entry | Steps 5 to 7 |
| Windows-level failure | Any stage; the PC restarts or shows a blue screen | Whole PC | Event Viewer entry, any crash dump, GPU driver version | Steps 6 and 7, then Step 8 |
Player reports on Steam discussions describe both app-only exits and system-level crashes, so the pattern you record determines which step matters. No official or attributable crash-rate figure is available, which means you cannot judge how common your particular problem is.
Step 2: Follow the pinned fix for “Failed to load il2cpp”
This is the only official guidance in the reviewed material, and it applies only when the launch error reads “Failed to load il2cpp.” The pinned post by developer account Max Conductor is dated April 10 on the Steam discussions page; confirm the year on the thread before relying on the date. The steps are:
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
- Open Settings → Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install every available update.
- Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection updates, select Check for updates, and install the latest Microsoft Defender security updates.
- Restart the PC.
- Launch Mechabellum again.
If the problem persists, the same post says:
“If the issue persists after following the above steps, please report the specific situation through our official channels.”
The post also describes a Smart App Control conflict as suspected, not confirmed. The pinned steps do not ask you to change that setting, so do not switch off a Windows protection feature on the strength of that suspicion alone. This fix addresses one named launch error. It does not explain crashes in a match or a Windows restart.

Step 3: Compare your PC with the listed requirements
Steam’s Windows requirements set a floor, not a guarantee. Meeting them does not rule out driver, game, or hardware problems. The Steam listing also includes macOS requirements, so the game is not Windows-only; this guide covers Windows PCs. Steam’s own client supports Windows 10 and later.
| Component | Minimum (Steam listing) | Recommended (Steam listing) |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | 64-bit Windows 8 or above | Windows 10 or above |
| Processor | 2-core 2 GHz Intel or AMD | 8th-generation Intel Core i7 or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X |
| Memory | 6 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | Radeon HD 7730 or GeForce GT 640 | Radeon RX 6700 XT or GeForce RTX 2080 |
| DirectX | Not stated on the Steam listing | DirectX 12 |
| Internet | Broadband | Broadband |
| Storage | 15 GB | 20 GB |
Requirements can change with updates, so check the live Steam store page before relying on these figures. Meeting the recommended column is also not evidence that a hardware purchase will stop a crash, so do not buy parts on that basis alone.

Step 4: Verify game files after an update or suspected corruption
- In Steam, open Library, right-click Mechabellum, and select Properties.
- Select Installed Files, then Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the check to finish, then launch the game.
Community threads recommend this check and report mixed results. It is inexpensive and changes nothing on your system beyond the game’s files, but it is not a cure. If it changes nothing, move on.
Step 5: Find and preserve the logs
Community guidance points to Player.log in %AppData%..LocalLowGameRiverMechabellum. Crash folders may appear under the GameRiver Mechabellum local data or a temporary-data location. The reports do not name one exact temporary path, so search for the GameRiver folder if a crash folder is not where you expect.

- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
- Copy Player.log to a separate folder before you relaunch, since a new session may overwrite it.
- Note the crash time and the timestamp of each file you copy.
- Leave the most recent crash folder untouched.
Logs record what the game wrote at the time. They do not reliably reveal the cause, so treat them as evidence to attach to a report.

- Open Event Viewer from the Start menu search.
- Go to Windows Logs → Application.
- Find entries from the time you recorded in Step 1. Look for an entry that names the game’s executable or a faulting module, or that mentions an access violation.
Community guidance suggests comparing event timing with the crash. A faulting module or access violation is worth reporting, but it is not proof of the underlying cause on its own. An entry that names a third-party module can point you toward a conflict to investigate; it does not confirm one.

Step 7: Change one graphics variable at a time
Use this step if the failure began after a graphics driver update, or if it happens only under heavy graphics settings. Change one thing per test and record each result.
- Record your current GPU driver version: Device Manager → Display adapters → your GPU → Properties → Driver tab.
- If the crash began after a driver update, try Roll Back Driver on the same Driver tab, or install the version your GPU vendor supports through its official software.
- If the crash happens only in heavy scenes, lower texture and other graphics presets one step, then test again.
Some older player posts credit a recent NVIDIA driver and lower texture settings, but those posts do not confirm either the cause or the fix. A crash alone does not establish a defective driver, failing hardware, or insufficient memory, and the reviewed evidence does not support those conclusions in general.
A community-suggested data reset, for specific launch problems only
A community officer suggested that players with a specific launch problem close the game and clear the contents of %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowGameRiverMechabellum. Treat this as an optional, symptom-specific suggestion rather than a routine first step. Preserve your logs first, copy the folder somewhere safe, and skip this step if you cannot tell what the files contain.
Step 8: Send the developer a report it can use
On Steam, Game River is listed as developer and Dreamhaven as publisher. Support is at [email protected]. A useful report includes:
