But the familiar story that Clefairy was formally appointed the franchise’s original mascot and then replaced goes beyond what the official account establishes.
Was Clefairy officially Pokémon’s first mascot?
Not on the evidence in The Pokémon Company’s creator profile. Ken Sugimori says he expected his Clefairy design to represent cute Pokémon, then saw Pikachu outdo it. That supports Clefairy as a character Sugimori thought could fill that representative role; it does not document a formal franchise-wide appointment or a corporate decision to replace it.
Sugimori put the comparison this way: “I thought the Clefairy I designed would be the representative of cute Pokémon, but it was completely outdone by Pikachu.” The distinction matters: he was describing his expectation for a cute character, not confirming an official mascot handoff. The Pokémon Company International’s creator profile also links Pikachu’s popularity to its becoming Ash’s partner in the TV anime.
Why did Pikachu become the face of Pokémon?
It outdid Sugimori’s expectation for Clefairy
The clearest explanation is the one Sugimori gives: Pikachu proved more appealing as a representative of cute Pokémon than the Clefairy he had designed with that role in mind. The profile does not identify a poll, sales result, or other quantified measure behind that assessment, so the comparison should remain an attributed recollection rather than a claim about measured popularity.

Popularity and the anime role reinforced its visibility
The official profile says Pikachu’s popularity helped make it Ash’s partner Pokémon. That prominent role gave viewers a recurring character to associate with the animated series, extending Pikachu’s visibility beyond the games. The source supports a connection between popularity and the anime choice; it does not establish a more detailed selection process or say that the anime alone created Pikachu’s appeal.
How the games and anime rollout fits the story
The chronology helps explain why the anime role mattered without making it the whole explanation. The Pokémon Company’s official history records the Japanese game launch before the Japanese anime, followed by the U.S. game and anime launches:

| Date and region | Milestone |
|---|---|
| February 1996, Japan | Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green launch for Game Boy. |
| April 1997, Japan | The Pokémon TV anime begins on TV Tokyo. |
| September 1998, United States | The first TV anime series launches in the U.S.; Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue also launch there for Game Boy. |
The games came first in Japan, so Pikachu’s prominence cannot be explained solely as a result of the anime. The later series gave the character a highly visible recurring role, and the U.S. rollout brought the games and anime to that market in the same month.

- Supported: Sugimori expected Clefairy to represent cute Pokémon, and says Pikachu outdid it.
- Supported: The official creator profile connects Pikachu’s popularity with its selection as Ash’s anime partner.
- Not established by that account: That Clefairy was formally chosen as Pokémon’s first franchise mascot, or that an explicit decision later replaced it with Pikachu.
So “Pikachu replaced Clefairy” works as shorthand for the contrast Sugimori described, but it should not be treated as a documented corporate history of an official mascot switch.
