What causes the reduced distance?
Niantic’s Buddy Adventure help page says the walking distance needed to collect a Candy is reduced while your Buddy is Excited. It separately describes “Adventure with Buddy” as a Good Buddy perk: while that Buddy is on the Map, it earns Candy at a reduced walking distance.

These are two documented contexts for seeing a reduction: the Buddy’s current Mood is Excited, and the Buddy has reached Good Buddy and is adventuring on the Map. Niantic does not provide separate numerical values for them, or say that either reduction is a particular fraction of the usual distance.
How Mood differs from Buddy Level
Mood is a changing state
Excited is the most positive Buddy Mood. Niantic says Mood can change through interactions and decrease over time. When your Buddy is Excited, the game displays double heart icons beside activities and more Affection hearts can be earned that day. The same help page associates this Mood with reduced Candy walking distance.

Buddy Level is progression
Buddy Level advances through Affection hearts. Good Buddy is a level, not a Mood. Its “Adventure with Buddy” perk applies when the Buddy is on the Map and earns Candy at a reduced walking distance. Keeping the terms separate helps explain why a Buddy’s level and its current Mood describe different parts of the feature.
Can you tell how much distance is reduced?
Not from the official help pages cited here. Niantic confirms that distance is reduced while the Buddy is Excited and describes the Good Buddy perk, but gives no numeric multiplier or exact distance. Treat the in-game display as the relevant value for your Buddy rather than assuming the distance is halved or applying an unofficial figure.

How a Poffin affects your Buddy
A Poffin fills your Buddy’s hunger meter, boosts its Mood to Excited, and makes it join your adventure on the Map. Niantic describes it as an in-game item in its item effects guide. It is one way to reach the documented Excited state; it is not an external product requirement.

Niantic says it requires location permissions and a connection to Apple Health or Google Fit, and is available from Trainer Level 5. It records travel in the background; it does not replace the Excited Mood condition or specify a different Candy-distance reduction.
