To get started in Path of Exile 2, choose a class whose combat style appeals to you, learn how active skill gems and support gems work together, and treat the passive tree as a way to develop your character over time. The campaign and its bosses teach you the basics through play, but the game’s systems and balance change during Early Access, so check the version date on any detailed build guide.

What to know before you start

Path of Exile 2 is an action RPG by Grinding Gear Games, set in Wraeclast. It is an Early Access game, so its features and progression systems may change. The developer announced Early Access for December 6, 2024; its FAQ described the game as it stood at launch, not necessarily as it plays now. Grinding Gear Games’ Early Access FAQ and the Epic Games Store listing provide the official overview.

One important change: the initial Early Access FAQ described a three-act campaign, but update 0.3.0, published August 21, 2025, added Act Four and removed Cruel Difficulty. The update introduced three temporary interludes before the endgame. The storefront also describes a six-act campaign, but that should not be read as a confirmed account of the Early Access progression described in the 0.3.0 notes. Read the official 0.3.0 notes.

Choose a class by how you want to fight

There is no supported “best beginner class” ranking here. Instead, pick a class fantasy or weapon style you find appealing, then consider the kind of play you want:

  • Close range or ranged: Decide whether you would rather stay near enemies or attack from a distance.
  • Simple or busy combat: Consider how many active skills and decisions you want to manage during a fight.
  • Focused or experimental: Choose whether you want to follow a clearer combat theme or try different skills as you learn.

These are practical ways to choose, not performance rankings. The Epic Games Store listing says classes are starting points and that skills from different classes can be combined. As you experiment, keep an eye on attribute requirements and whether your skills support the way you want to play. The listing accessed October 8, 2026, states that the game has 12 character classes; that is a storefront feature count, not a guarantee that class balance or availability will stay unchanged.

Learn how skill gems, supports, and the passive tree fit together

Active skill gems

Active skill gems give you the skills you use in combat. Start with a small set you understand: a main attack or spell, plus other skills that suit your approach. Read each gem’s in-game description so you know what it does and what it requires.

Support gems

Support gems modify active skills rather than serving as the main action themselves. The storefront describes supports as being socketed directly into skill gems. The rules have changed during Early Access: the 0.3.0 notes describe the removal of a former restriction against using only one copy of each support type, as well as the addition of support tiers. Do not rely on an old guide’s assumptions; check the current gem text and use guides that identify their game version.

Passive skill tree

The passive tree is a major part of character development and customization. Its size can make it tempting to copy a detailed route immediately, but a route depends on the build and game version. Learn what your skills need, then consult a version-specific guide if you want a more prescriptive plan. The Epic Games Store listing accessed October 8, 2026, states that the game has 1,500 passive skills; this is the listing’s figure, not an independently verified count.

Make progress through the campaign and its bosses

Boss encounters are part of campaign progression, so expect to learn fights as well as develop your character. A practical approach is to watch for an attack’s tell, move out of dangerous areas, and use openings to attack. If progress stalls, revisit your equipment and skills and consider whether your current setup matches the fight. This is general play advice, not a tested strategy for a particular boss.

Act Four is non-linear: in its 0.3.0 notes, Grinding Gear Games says, “Act Four is completely non-linear and you can visit the islands in any order you choose.” That flexibility applies to Act Four as described in those notes; it does not establish that every act follows the same structure.

Keep build advice tied to a game version

Detailed build recommendations can become stale as gems, supports, and balance change. The official patch index surfaced update 0.4.0i, dated March 24, 2026, but that information does not establish whether it was still the newest update on October 8, 2026. Before following a build, check its stated version and compare its gem advice with the current in-game descriptions. The official 0.4.0i patch notes are one dated reference, not confirmation of the version live on that later date.
