A video showed the game partially loading with what appeared to be a simulated background server—but its creators described that as a proof of concept, not a finished replacement. The central challenge, according to reporting, is getting EA’s Frostbite engine to work without the servers the online-only game depended on.
Can you still play Anthem?
Not through the official service. EA announced in July 2025 that it would sunset Anthem’s live servers on January 13, 2026, and said existing purchasers could download and play through January 12. Ars Technica subsequently reported that EA shut the servers down on January 12, leaving the game unplayable. Those are two different dates: January 13 was EA’s announced sunset date; January 12 was Ars’s reported date for the observed shutdown.

Anthem is an online-only BioWare game published by EA, so owning a copy does not by itself provide a way to play once the official service is gone. Ars had reported before the shutdown that EA removed the game from digital storefronts after announcing the closure, while existing digital owners could still redownload it at that time. That pre-shutdown access report does not guarantee that downloads remain available now.
What did the community revival project actually demonstrate?
A video discussed by Ars in its January 28, 2026 report showed Anthem at least partially loading on what appeared to be a simulated background server. The project members cautioned against treating the demonstration as proof that the game had been restored or was ready for public play. It is evidence of an early proof of concept—not a released, playable replacement for EA’s service.

- Requires online subscription
That distinction matters: getting part of the game to load in a demonstration is not the same as delivering a complete experience that players can access. The available reporting does not establish that the project has released a public service or that it has solved the problems needed for one.
Why is bringing Anthem back difficult?
The game was built around an online service
The shutdown removed the official server environment on which this online-only game depended. A community effort therefore has to do more than distribute game files or make the game appear to start: it must find a way for the game to function without EA’s service.

Frostbite has to run without EA’s servers
Ars identifies the technical challenge as getting EA’s Frostbite engine to run without access to EA’s servers. The report’s accessible details do not provide a full technical diagnosis, so it would be premature to name specific authentication, network-protocol, or infrastructure blockers as established facts. What is clear is that the demonstration’s partial loading did not establish that the engine and game could operate as a complete player-ready experience independently of EA.
A proof of concept is not a finished revival
A partial-load video can show that a technical approach has made progress without showing that all of the game works, that other players can connect, or that a stable service is available. Ars reported that the people behind the project themselves tempered expectations. Until a playable replacement is actually announced and demonstrated as such, the video should be understood narrowly: a sign of experimentation, not a restoration.

What is known about the project’s status?
As of Ars Technica’s January 28, 2026 report, the project had shown a proof of concept, but the report did not describe a finished public replacement for the official servers. That reporting is a snapshot, not a guarantee of the project’s later status. The cited sources do not establish a supported community revival option that players can use now.
