Riot acknowledged that The Brink of Infinity, its League of Legends Season 2023 cinematic, missed the mark with viewers who expected an action-packed, champion-led trailer. Riot said “unprecedented circumstances” prompted an alternate approach, but did not specify what those circumstances were. It also said it would communicate better about its investment in League.
What was The Brink of Infinity?
Riot’s official archive lists The Brink of Infinity | Season 2023 Cinematic – League of Legends on January 10, 2023, presenting it as a video marking the arrival of Season 2023.
Contemporaneous coverage described the roughly two-minute video as a flythrough of Summoner’s Rift accompanied by voiceover. Rather than centering on champions in action, it lingered on the game’s map and atmosphere. (GameSpot; PC Gamer)
Why were fans disappointed with the League cinematic?
Viewers had come to expect season-opening videos built around dramatic scenes and recognizable champions. GameSpot and PC Gamer contrasted The Brink of Infinity with that action-forward, character-focused format, noting its relative lack of action and champion presence.
#1 Best Overall
The criticism was about the gap between the video’s restrained presentation and the kind of cinematic many viewers expected—not evidence of a measured consensus among all players. Riot’s own response acknowledged that gap: the video “missed the mark for the action-packed, champion-led trailer you expected.”
What did Riot say about the alternate approach?
In a January 10, 2023 thread from the official League of Legends account, Riot said: “There were some unprecedented circumstances that had us choose an alternate approach to the Season 2023 video.” The account did not identify those circumstances. PC Gamer likewise reported that the specific explanation was unclear.

That leaves the reason unresolved. The available reporting does not establish that budget, staffing, or any particular business decision caused the video’s format. Those explanations should not be treated as fact.
What did Riot promise after the backlash?
Riot said it had heard the feedback and recognized that the cinematic had also prompted speculation about the company’s investment in League. The official account stated: “We do believe that League has a bright future and we are investing in that, but we can do a better job of sharing those plans with you.”
