Robert X. Cringely’s “Why I have grown to hate steamgames.com” is a first-person opinion essay published October 7, 2014—not a current investigation of Steam’s payment systems. Cringely wrote that his son used a payment card borrowed from his desk to spend more than $200 on Steam in-game items. His account explains his anger; it does not independently establish how the transaction was authorized or what checks the payment processor performed.
What Cringely said happened
In the essay, Cringely described his son buying “over $200 worth of in-game weapons, tools, etc.” on Steam using a card taken from his desk. He said he expected stronger checks on the card and billing details, and argued that the apparent lack of friction made unauthorized spending too easy. Those are Cringely’s reported experience and interpretation, not independently verified transaction records.
Why readers disputed the account
When BetaNews republished the essay on October 7, 2014, its comment thread included readers who said Steam required billing details and others who questioned whether the address had actually been verified. Those comments show that readers disagreed; they do not establish which checks applied to Cringely’s transaction or what the payment processor actually verified. The available historical record does not resolve that question.
What parents can do with Steam today
Steam’s current Steam Families User Guide & FAQ describes adult and child roles. Adults can manage a child’s access to games and Steam features, set playtime limits, view reports, and respond to requests for additional playtime or feature access.

Have an adult approve a child’s purchase request
A child can ask an adult in the Steam Family to pay for the child’s shopping cart. The adult can review and approve the request, then pay through a mobile device or email. This is a documented way to involve an adult in a child’s purchase; it should not be treated as a guarantee against every unauthorized use of a payment card.
Use a gift card for a defined budget
Steam says physical and digital Steam Gift Cards can be used for Steam purchases. A physical Steam gift card can set a finite amount of credit to give, but it does not control account permissions or require adult approval for each purchase. Check current retailer availability before planning to buy one.
Keep the options distinct

Refunds depend on what was bought
Steam’s refund policy, marked last updated April 23, 2024, says most games and software can be requested for refund within 14 days of purchase if they have been played for less than two hours. Exclusions apply, and refund requests are subject to review.
In-game purchases have separate terms. For Valve-developed games, an in-game purchase may be refundable within 48 hours if the item has not been consumed, modified, or transferred. Third-party developers decide whether to offer refunds for in-game purchases; Steam says availability is identified at purchase. Check the applicable terms for the specific item rather than assuming the standard game rule applies.
