Valve restricted OPSkins’ Steam-linked trading operation in June 2018, saying the site’s ExpressTrade feature used Valve intellectual property and violated the Steam Subscriber Agreement. That action threatened OPSkins’ ability to trade Steam items, but it was not announced as a shutdown of the entire site. A later closure and redirect to a WAX marketplace were reported in January 2020; the exact closure date and official reason are not established by the available sources.
What Valve said about OPSkins in 2018
On June 8, 2018, Valve’s Counter-Strike: Global Offensive team said OPSkins had launched ExpressTrade two days earlier. Valve’s stated objection was that ExpressTrade used Valve intellectual property, violated the Steam Subscriber Agreement, and was being used by other businesses to avoid Valve policies. Valve said it had asked OPSkins to stop using its intellectual property and planned to lock OPSkins Steam accounts by June 21. Valve’s June 8, 2018 notice
The account restrictions mattered because OPSkins relied on Steam-linked item trading. Valve did not describe the notice as a lawsuit or announce that the entire OPSkins business would end. Contemporary reporting quoted OPSkins asking customers to withdraw Steam-based items before the planned restrictions, while also saying the action did not mean the site itself was ending at that point. Why the trade cooldown was part of the dispute
The enforcement followed a change Valve had announced on March 29, 2018: CS:GO items received in trade would have the same seven-day trade cooldown as items bought in-game or through the Steam Community Market. Valve framed that change as a response to fraud and scams involving third-party services that used automated Steam accounts. In its June notice, Valve said ExpressTrade was being used to avoid its policies. Valve’s March 29, 2018 cooldown announcement

Those statements establish Valve’s rationale and intended restriction. They do not, by themselves, establish that Valve’s June 2018 action permanently closed OPSkins or explain every later change to the business.

What happened to OPSkins after the Valve action?
In January 2020, a Steam Community discussion reported that OPSkins had closed and that its site redirected to a WAX marketplace. WAX was developing a blockchain-based platform for digital goods and announced gaming-related activity in 2019. These details provide context for the redirect, but they do not prove why OPSkins ultimately closed, when the closure occurred, or whether the WAX marketplace was simply the same OPSkins service under a new name.

No authoritative OPSkins or WAX statement in the available sources confirms the exact later closure date or gives a definitive explanation. It is therefore more accurate to distinguish Valve’s documented 2018 restriction on Steam-linked trading from the closure and redirect reported later.

The contemporary 2018 withdrawal notice concerned customers withdrawing Steam-based items before Valve’s planned account restrictions. It is not evidence that withdrawals, balance recovery, or inventory access remain available now. The available sources do not confirm a current recovery process, so do not assume old items or funds can still be retrieved.
