SOMA crashes on Steam Deck for several possible reasons, and no published source establishes a single cause that explains every case. The reports describe black screens or crashes at startup, crashes after loading, and freezes during play. The most reliable approach is to work through the checks below in order, starting with the low-risk Steam Deck system steps and moving toward game-specific compatibility tests. Each step tells you what it does and how far its evidence goes.
Identify the crash before you change anything
The fix depends on when SOMA fails, so note the exact point first. A black screen or crash at launch points toward startup and compatibility problems. A crash after the loading screen, or a freeze during play, points toward the game’s runtime environment and graphics load. Community reports cover both patterns, and the sources reviewed do not show that they share one root cause.

Also record three details before testing:
- Installed build: whether SOMA is running its Linux build or a Windows build through Proton.
- Selected compatibility tool: the Proton version shown in the game’s Properties > Compatibility menu, if any.
- Background software: whether third-party apps installed through Desktop Mode are running.
Keeping these facts recorded makes each later test easier to interpret. If a change appears to help, you will know what changed.

1. Install pending Steam Deck system updates and restart
Steam’s first step for system instability is to update the device and restart it. Steam Support’s Steam Deck – Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide says: “To address issues with system instability, install any available system updates (Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates) and restart your Steam Deck (from the Software Updates section or via Steam > Power > Restart).” Source: Steam Support, Steam Deck – Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide.

2. Temporarily exit or disable third-party Desktop Mode apps
For instability in Steam applications, the same guide recommends exiting or disabling third-party apps installed through Desktop Mode, then restarting. Turn them back on after testing so you can tell whether they were involved.

3. Check SOMA’s Deck Verified status
Steam sorts games into four Deck categories: Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. Check the current category on the Deck Verified pages and the compatibility section of SOMA’s Steam Store page, which can list requirements the game does not currently meet. The sources reviewed for this article did not confirm SOMA’s current rating, so treat the store listing as the authority and check it on the day you troubleshoot. A rating only describes expected behavior; it does not guarantee that your particular crash will not happen.

4. Try the latest Proton from Properties > Compatibility
Steam’s guide says to make sure Proton is enabled for the specific game from its Library entry, then open Properties > Compatibility and try the latest Proton version. This is general Steam guidance, not a statement that a particular Proton release fixes SOMA. Steam also warns that choosing a Proton tool may make it download the Windows version of the game if only the Linux version is installed. Expect a download and a larger installed footprint in that case.

5. Optionally test Proton Experimental
Only consider this if the standard setting still fails. One community user on Steam Deck reported that forcing Proton Experimental resolved a SOMA loading crash for them. That is a single, version-specific account, not official confirmation and not a guaranteed fix. Before you change anything, write down the original compatibility setting so you can restore it. Another community thread reports a SOMA loading crash on Linux, so results clearly vary.

6. Lower the graphics preset
Steam recommends lowering the graphics preset or individual settings to reduce system load. This is a broad stability check for demanding games. The source does not link this step to a SOMA-specific cause, so if lowering settings changes the crash point, that is useful information, but it does not prove the game is misconfigured.

7. Verify the installed game files
Frictional Games’ support article on SOMA crashes and freezes recommends verifying the game cache through Steam, which checks the installed files against the server copies. The same article mentions bad file permissions. Its administrator-mode instructions, however, are written for Windows Vista, 7, and 8.x. Do not run SOMA’s Windows executable as administrator on Steam Deck. Source: Frictional Games Support, SOMA crashes / freezes during gameplay.

- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
When none of the fixes work
If the crash continues after all seven steps, the evidence does not identify a further universal fix. Record the crash stage, the build and Proton version, the Steam Deck update status, and whether Desktop Mode apps were running during each test. Steam’s official Steam Deck support path and Steam’s SOMA technical-issue wizard are the places to report a reproducible problem: Steam Support, SOMA – Gameplay or technical issue.

Steam’s official guidance covers system updates, restarts, Desktop Mode app handling, Proton settings, and graphics settings. Frictional Games’ article covers game-file verification. The community threads cited above are individual user experiences and are not verified statements from Valve or Frictional Games. SOMA’s Steam support page lists Frictional Games as developer and publisher, gives a release date of September 21, 2015, and lists Windows, macOS, and SteamOS/Linux requirements, so the Linux build is an officially supported platform. Steam’s compatibility documentation explains that games without native Linux builds run through Proton on Deck, and its Deck Verified criteria require a supported Deck resolution and, for Proton titles, support for the game and its middleware. Those criteria help explain a Deck rating, but they do not explain a specific crash.
Based on the available sources, no purchase, accessory, or hardware change is required to troubleshoot SOMA. Steps 1 through 7 involve software settings only.
