The Indie Game Awards initially named Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 both Game of the Year and Debut Game. The organization later withdrew those awards after learning of generative-AI use during development. It said a Sandfall representative had agreed during submission that no generative AI was used, then confirmed AI art use in production on the day of the 2025 premiere. The organization said that violated its rules and reassigned the awards: Blue Prince received Game of the Year, and Sorry We’re Closed received Debut Game. What Sandfall said about AI in the game
In a July 19, 2025 interview with EL PAÍS, producer François Meurisse said, “We use some AI, but not much.” Sandfall’s fuller clarification said some team members briefly experimented with AI tools in 2022 to make temporary placeholder textures. The studio said no generative-AI-created assets remained in the game and that instances of a placeholder texture were removed within five days of release, replaced with intended textures that had been missed in QA.

Those are Sandfall’s statements about its development process, not an independent audit of the project. The studio’s account distinguishes temporary development placeholders from content deliberately shipped in the final game. The Indie Game Awards’ account distinguishes neither on eligibility grounds: its stated rule concerned AI use during development. Why some fans say the decision was unjust
One post in the r/expedition33 community described the game as “unjustly” losing an indie award and pointed to Sandfall’s clarification. That captures one fan’s objection: if the AI-made textures were temporary, were removed, and were not part of the final intended artwork, taking away the awards may seem disproportionate.

What did the rule cover?
The awards organization said its policy covered generative-AI use during development. Under that standard, removing an AI-created placeholder later does not erase the fact that the tool was used. A narrower standard—disqualifying only games that ship AI-generated creative assets—would treat Sandfall’s account differently, but that is not the scope the organizers said they applied.
How consequential was the use?
Sandfall described brief experimentation for temporary textures, rather than AI-generated work retained as part of the released game. That distinction matters to anyone judging artistic contribution or the final player experience. It does not, on its own, resolve eligibility under a rule that covers any use during development.
