Why Some Switch 2 Games Look Awful—and How to Fix It

Blurry game graphics and scrambled docked TV output have different causes. Compare handheld and docked play, update the game, and isolate the TV connection before changing settings.

A soft, low-detail image and a scrambled TV picture are different problems. If one game looks blurry but stable, check its rendering, updates, and whether it is original Switch software. If the picture is distorted only when docked, troubleshoot the HDMI connection and TV path. Comparing handheld and docked play—and one affected game with another—will point you toward the right fix.

First, identify what “looks awful” means

Start with three comparisons: is the image blurry or low-detail, or is it scrambled or distorted? Does it happen in one game or several? Does it happen in handheld mode, docked mode, or both? Nintendo separates single-game handheld-screen issues from problems affecting all games and from distorted TV output, so these details help narrow the cause.

  • One game looks soft, but the picture is stable: the game’s rendering choices, backward compatibility, or a title-specific issue may be involved.
  • The TV image is scrambled or distorted only when docked: check the dock, HDMI cable, TV input, and any devices between the dock and TV.
  • Several games look wrong in handheld mode: follow Nintendo’s handheld-screen troubleshooting, starting with system and game updates.

Why a game can look blurry on Switch 2

A sharper display does not automatically make a game render more detail. The game’s own resolution and graphics settings determine the image it produces; the screen then displays or scales that image.

Original Switch games can look soft when scaled

Some original Switch games render at 720p in handheld mode. Ars Technica reported that scaling a 720p image to Switch 2’s 1080p handheld display can make affected backward-compatible games look worse than they did on the original Switch screen. That explanation applies to the original Switch software discussed in the report—not to every Switch 2 game or every blurry image.

A title-specific issue may need an update

Nintendo recommends updating both the system and the affected game. Its compatibility list records game-specific behavior differences and issues, including some marked as resolved by updates. Check the current entry for the particular title rather than treating the list as a general promise of image quality.

Fix a soft or low-detail image in one game

  1. Check which version of the game you are playing. Establish whether it is original Switch software or a Switch 2 game, and whether the image looks soft in handheld mode, docked mode, or both.
  2. Update the console and game, then restart. Nintendo’s handheld-screen guidance recommends checking for a system update, restarting, and checking for an update to the affected game. Use the current instructions for your region.
  3. Check the title’s compatibility information. Look for a specific issue or update note in Nintendo’s Switch 2 game compatibility list. A listing is title-specific guidance, not a guarantee that every game will look equally sharp.
  4. If it is an original Switch game played handheld, consider Handheld Mode Boost. This optional feature, reported as added in system software version 22.0.0, attempts to run original Switch games with their TV-mode settings while handheld. It may use more battery, disable touchscreen use, and change Joy-Con behavior. It does not improve Switch 2 software. Check the console’s current system version and setting availability before relying on it.
  5. If the problem persists, follow Nintendo’s service guidance. Nintendo’s support flow directs users toward service when an affected downloaded game still has the issue after updates and a restart; it handles game-card cases separately. Consult current regional support instructions.

Fix a scrambled or distorted picture when docked

If handheld play looks normal but the TV picture is wrong, isolate the docked connection before changing game settings.

  1. Compare with handheld mode. Undock the console and check whether the image is normal on its screen. If it is, focus on the TV-output path.
  2. Update and restart the console. Then check that the dock’s power and HDMI connections are seated properly and that cables are not visibly damaged.
  3. Connect the dock directly to the TV. Temporarily remove a sound bar, receiver, adapter, or other device between the dock and TV. Nintendo says Switch 2 is intended to be used with an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
  4. Change one connection component at a time. Try another HDMI input and cable; if practical, test a different TV or dock. Changing one item per test can help identify whether the symptom follows the cable, input, display, or dock. A replacement cable is relevant only if the existing cable or connection is at fault; it will not fix a game’s low-resolution rendering.
  5. Inspect the TV output settings. Open System Settings > Display to check the selected TV resolution and video output information. Select a resolution the TV supports. Choosing a higher output resolution does not force a game to render internally at that resolution.
  6. Contact Nintendo support if the distortion continues. Nintendo advises service assessment if image defects persist on multiple HDMI-capable TVs. Service and warranty steps vary by region.

What TV resolution and refresh-rate settings can—and cannot—do

Nintendo lists Automatic, 720p, 1080p, 1440p, and 2160p TV-resolution options. These govern the console’s TV output signal; they are not a control that makes each game render at the chosen resolution. If an image is stable but lacks detail, selecting 2160p is not a general graphics fix.

120Hz output works only when supported by both the TV and the software, and only at 1080p or 1440p. ALLM, VRR, and HDR also depend on compatible equipment or software. Check Nintendo’s TV resolution and video-output information for the available settings and compatibility details.

Compare the options that can actually change the result

Situation Option to compare What it can change Trade-off or limit
Original Switch game in handheld mode Standard mode vs. Handheld Mode Boost Boost attempts to use the game’s TV-mode settings while handheld. May consume more battery, disable touchscreen use, and change Joy-Con behavior; it is for original Switch software, not Switch 2 games.
Scrambled or distorted TV picture Current setup vs. direct HDMI connection or an alternate cable, input, TV, or dock Changing one component at a time can help isolate the source of the fault. This diagnoses the TV connection path; it does not improve a game’s internal rendering.
TV output resolution Automatic vs. a manually selected resolution the TV supports Changes the console’s output signal to the TV. Does not set the game’s internal render resolution; 120Hz and other features have compatibility requirements.
