Square Enix announced a more aggressive multiplatform strategy for HD games in 2024, aiming to reach more players and diversify earnings opportunities. Its later progress report shows selected games expanding to PC, Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch 2—but the company’s financial disclosures do not establish that PS5 exclusivity alone caused Final Fantasy XVI or Final Fantasy VII Rebirth to disappoint.
Why is Square Enix going multiplatform?
Square Enix’s 2024 medium-term plan said it would “aggressively pursue” a multiplatform strategy for HD titles across Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox and PC. In its May 14, 2025 results briefing, the company said the goal was “to expand our customer contact points and to create more diverse earnings opportunities.” Square Enix’s May 2025 results briefing

The strategy is not a promise that every game will launch on every platform at the same time. Square Enix’s November 2025 progress report describes work to extend selected established games to additional systems, with the stated aim of growing each IP’s fan base. It characterizes that expansion work as “steadily advancing.” Square Enix’s November 2025 progress report
Did Final Fantasy XVI and Rebirth underperform because they were PS5 exclusives?
The available company reporting does not prove that. In its FY2024/3 stakeholder report, Square Enix said HD game sales increased year over year following major releases that included Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. It also reported that profit in the HD Games sub-segment declined, citing development-cost amortization and advertising expenses associated with new releases. The report does not give title-level sales figures for either game or isolate exclusivity as the cause of the segment result. Square Enix FY2024/3 stakeholder report

The figures need to be kept in their proper categories. Square Enix reported FY2024/3 sales of ¥356.3 billion and operating income of ¥32.5 billion for the company overall. Its Digital Entertainment segment reported net sales of ¥248.1 billion and operating income of ¥25.4 billion; those are not HD Games-only figures. The company also recorded a ¥22 billion loss on disposal of content as an extraordinary loss, connected to terminating development efforts on certain content—not specifically to PS5 exclusivity. Which Square Enix games expanded beyond their initial platforms?
Square Enix’s November 2025 table separates platforms available at initial launch from later platform support. The examples below reflect that report’s status at the time; later announcements or releases may have superseded planned dates or availability. Square Enix’s November 2025 progress report
| Game | Initial platform noted in report | Later platform support noted in report | Timing or status in the report |
|---|---|---|---|
| Final Fantasy XVI | PlayStation 5 | PC; Xbox Series | PC launched September 2024; Xbox Series launched June 2025 |
| Final Fantasy VII Remake | PlayStation 4 | PC; Nintendo Switch 2; Xbox Series | PC launched December 2021; Switch 2 and Xbox Series listed for 2026 |
| Final Fantasy VII Rebirth | PlayStation 5 | PC; Nintendo Switch 2; Xbox Series | PC launched January 2025; Switch 2 and Xbox Series support marked planned |
These are examples of catalog expansion, not evidence that the games had simultaneous launches across platforms. The report’s distinction between initial launch and later support matters: a game arriving on additional systems later is a different release pattern from a new title launching everywhere at once.

What should players expect from the strategy?
Expect more selected Square Enix games to reach additional platforms, but check each title’s current listing rather than assuming a date or system from an older corporate update. The November 2025 report records a point-in-time status, and some entries were still planned rather than released. It does not establish that all future Final Fantasy games—or every Square Enix game—will come to Xbox, Nintendo systems and PC.
The commercial rationale is plausible as a company strategy: more platforms can create more opportunities to reach customers. But Square Enix’s stated goals are not proof of sales impact, and its disclosed financial results do not show that platform exclusivity by itself caused the HD Games profit decline. Treat the move as a documented strategic direction with title-by-title execution, not a settled explanation for past results.
