The company’s November 2025 report set a target of automating 70% of those tasks by the end of 2027; it did not report that the target had been achieved.
What Square Enix announced in 2024
In a New Year’s letter dated January 1, 2024, Square Enix Holdings president and representative director Takashi Kiryu said the company intended to apply AI and other advanced technologies across both content development and publishing. He wrote: “We also intend to be aggressive in applying AI and other cutting-edge technologies to both our content development and our publishing functions.” (Square Enix Holdings, January 1, 2024.)
Kiryu described two near-term aims: improving development productivity and making marketing more sophisticated. Over the longer term, he said Square Enix hoped to create new forms of consumer content. The letter framed these as intentions and ambitions; it did not name AI vendors, products, games, deployment dates, or measurable results.
What the later disclosures add
A reported review process in 2024
In a June 2024 account of Kiryu’s remarks on an investor call, PC Gamer reported that Square Enix reviewed AI-related tools before internal use and that the company would use generative AI in areas unrelated to creativity. The report characterized generative AI in creative fields as a delicate issue. This is a secondary account of the call, not a replacement for the company’s 2024 letter. (PC Gamer, June 21, 2024.)

A specific QA research target in 2025
Square Enix’s November 6, 2025 progress report described joint research with the University of Tokyo’s Matsuo-Iwasawa Laboratory on generative-AI technology for game QA automation. The report said the joint research team included more than ten laboratory researchers and Square Enix group engineers. It set a goal of automating 70% of QA and debugging tasks in game development by the end of 2027. That figure is Square Enix’s future target, not a reported achieved rate. These disclosures do not establish that particular Square Enix games contain AI-generated assets or that AI is already being used to create game content. The 2024 letter set out a broad plan for development and publishing, while the 2025 report identified research into QA and debugging automation. Neither source names a released game using generated content or reports completed deployment of the 70% automation goal.
The sources also do not identify a commercial AI model or vendor, or say whether the automation target would affect staffing. The stated goal concerns tasks; it is not evidence of a plan to replace employees.
