Hollow Knight: Silksong is no longer awaiting news: Team Cherry released it on September 4, 2025. In interviews shortly before launch, co-directors Ari Gibson and William Pellen said the game had kept progressing, but its scope grew and the small team chose to focus on development rather than publish frequent updates.
Why did Team Cherry go quiet about Silksong?
The developers’ explanation was straightforward: they had little to announce beyond that the game was still being made, and they believed their time was better spent working on it than posting low-information updates. That is their account of the communication gap, not proof that every fan found the silence acceptable.
In an August 22, 2025 interview with GameSpot, co-director Ari Gibson said, “All we could really say is, ‘We’re still working on it.’” William Pellen said the team felt its responsibility was “just to work on the game” rather than “popping up and bugging people for the sake of it.”
That helps explain why the long stretches without news did not produce a steady stream of progress reports. The team did not describe a deliberate marketing strategy or a specific hidden setback; it said it had little useful to report while development continued.

Was Silksong stuck in development?
Gibson said it was not. “It was always progressing,” he told GameSpot, adding that Team Cherry was a small team and games take a long time. He also said there was no “big controversial moment” behind the delay and that the game was “never stuck or anything.” These are the developers’ statements about the project, rather than an independently verified account of every stage of production.
Why did the game take so long?
A planned expansion became a standalone game
Silksong began as an expansion for Hollow Knight. As the ideas and content grew, Team Cherry decided Hornet’s story needed a new world of its own. Gibson told ABC News that the team had a habit of expanding content and concluded Hornet needed “a new world, in a land that fit her scale and then also match her identity.” The shift from expansion to standalone sequel meant a larger game than the original concept.

The team kept adding ideas
Gibson also joked to GameSpot, “If I don’t stop drawing, this is going to take 15 years to finish.” The remark captures the tension in the team’s explanation: new ideas helped shape the game, but expanding a project also takes time. Pellen described the aim as making the version of the game that best satisfied the team’s original theme and vision, in comments reported by ABC News.
When did Hollow Knight: Silksong come out?
Team Cherry announced that Hollow Knight: Silksong was available on September 4, 2025, saying it launched on all platforms and was available on Xbox Game Pass from day one. The announcement is on Team Cherry’s official blog.

Is Silksong still getting updates?
Team Cherry continued supporting the game after launch. Its official blog index lists Patch 5, dated March 16, 2026, as live on PC, with console availability to follow. The index establishes that update, but does not establish that it is the final patch.
Team Cherry also announced the Sea of Sorrow expansion for 2026 in a December 15, 2025 update. That post is an announcement of the expansion, not confirmation here of its eventual release status. The same update mentions Silksong mini figurines and merchandise prepared with Fangamer: Team Cherry’s holiday update.

Can you buy a physical edition?
Fangamer lists standard physical editions for Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X. Its Switch 2 edition includes a 32-page manual and a 9-by-12-inch poster. However, the listing checked on October 8, 2026 reported the item out of stock and said it was scheduled to ship November 10, 2026. Stock and shipping dates can change, so check the Fangamer listing for current availability before relying on those details.
