Tetris is still popular because it combines simple rules with a mastery curve that keeps players coming back, while its abstract, peaceful design travels easily across cultures and platforms. The Tetris Company’s CEO, Maya Rogers, calls it a “perfect game”—and says the company does not want to change what makes it work.
What makes Tetris feel like a “perfect game”?
In a VentureBeat/GamesBeat interview conducted at the New Global Sport Conference in Riyadh, Maya Rogers described Tetris as the perfect game, while acknowledging her connection to the company. Her explanation is practical: newcomers can understand the basic task quickly, but mastering it takes time. The rules are easy to enter; the challenge does not run out as soon as a player learns them.
That combination supports quick sessions as well as long-term play. A new player can focus on placing falling pieces, while an experienced one can work on speed, planning and keeping the board clear. Rogers’s conclusion was, “We don’t want to mess with that.”
Why has Tetris lasted since its 1984 debut?
Abstract shapes make it easy to cross cultural boundaries
Creator Alexey Pajitnov has pointed to the game’s geometric shapes and lack of strong cultural references as reasons it can speak to people in many places. The Seattle Times, in a report republished by the Spokesman-Review, also attributes its appeal to a peaceful, constructive quality that contrasts with games centered on fighting and competition.

Together, those qualities make Tetris legible without a story, setting or cultural background that players must first understand. Its challenge comes from arranging shapes, not from learning a fictional world.
It keeps appearing where players already are
Rogers also credits availability: Tetris stays relevant by being present on the platforms where people play. That is a distribution strategy as much as a design advantage. A familiar game can meet players on different devices and in different contexts without requiring its central rules to be reinvented.

- ACCESSIBLE & ENGAGING - The giant game board measures 12 x 12 inches – almost 2 inches larger than the regular game, making the pieces easier to see and pick up!
- SIMPLE, YET CHALLENGING – It's the perfect strategy game for the whole family! It takes less than a minute to learn but can be played over and over again as players' strategies evolve.
- JUST ONE RULE - Players take turns placing their 21 pieces on the board. Each piece must touch another of the same color, but only at the corners!
- PLACE & BLOCK - Fit as many pieces on the board as possible while strategically blocking opponents!
- PLAY TO WIN - The game ends when no more pieces can be placed down, and the player with the lowest number remaining wins!
Rogers has called the game “evergreen,” describing its ability to resonate across generations without constant reinvention in a Thought Economics interview. That does not mean every version is identical; it means the basic appeal can endure while the game continues to find new settings.
Did Tetris need better graphics to succeed?
Henk Rogers, Maya Rogers’s father and a key figure in Tetris’s business history, has recalled that ASCII—the biggest software company in Japan at the time—passed on the game in 1988 as “too retro.” His takeaway was that strong gameplay can matter more than graphics and sound. The anecdote captures a tension in Tetris’s history: what one decision-maker saw as dated presentation did not prevent the core game from enduring.

Rogers has suggested that Tetris could be a strong fit for the Olympics. She described it as a global brand and argued that Olympic inclusion could help legitimize the video-game industry. This is a possibility she raised, not an announcement that Tetris has been selected as an Olympic sport.

She also expressed enthusiasm about the Middle East’s gaming scene, pointing to its young population and the growing number of women entering the workforce to make games. In her view, the region is part of a wider future for gaming and esports.
Who runs Tetris, and who created it?
Alexey Pajitnov created Tetris. Maya Rogers is CEO of The Tetris Company; she took over from her father, Henk Rogers, who helped secure and develop the game’s business rights. The company’s history includes a major rights settlement: a Collider interview extract says the rights reverted to Pajitnov in 1995, after which Henk Rogers settled with ELORG and established The Tetris Company.
The company’s stewardship now involves preserving the recognizable game while finding ways for it to appear across platforms and beyond games. That balance—continuity in the play, flexibility in how people encounter it—is central to the explanation for Tetris’s longevity.
