Xbox Game Pass Price Increase: Who Is Protected and What Changed in 2026

Some existing Game Pass subscribers were spared from the 2025 price increase, but only under a temporary exception reported for certain countries, and only for people who kept an active, auto-renewing plan. The exception was not described as a permanent or worldwide rate lock, and it did not extend to anyone who canceled and then resubscribed. Xbox has changed its plans again in 2026, so the only reliable check is the price shown for your own account.

Who the 2025 exception covered

Reporting from 2025 described a temporary carve-out for existing Game Pass subscribers. To fall inside it, a subscriber had to meet all of the following conditions as reported:

• The subscription was already active before the increase took effect.
• The plan was set to renew automatically and stayed that way.

The reports did not publish a complete country list, and they did not describe the exception as a universal policy. Treat it as a regional, conditional carve-out rather than a global guarantee.

What the exception did not cover

Three limits matter more than the headline:

• Cancel and repurchase: A subscriber who canceled and later resubscribed was charged the current price. Leaving auto-renewal on is what preserved the old rate, and a gap in the subscription ended it.
• Temporary status: The exception was described as time-limited. Subscribers could be notified of later account changes with advance notice, so a protected rate should not be treated as fixed.
• No permanent grandfathering: None of the reporting established a rate that would hold indefinitely for existing members.

How to check your own account

Individual account terms were not published in the reporting, so your Microsoft account and the notice you received are the authority. Work through these checks in order:

1. Confirm the country or market associated with your Microsoft account.
2. Confirm that your Game Pass subscription is active and set to renew automatically.
3. Check whether you canceled at any point since the increase. If you did, assume the current price applies.
4. Open the renewal details in your Microsoft account and compare the next renewal date and amount against the notice you received. If the two do not match, use the notice and the account’s billing information as your reference point when you contact Xbox support.

2026 changes that affect what you pay

Xbox has announced further changes since the 2025 increase. Each one is separate from the 2025 exception and applies on its own terms.

Monthly prices in France

Xbox’s French-language announcement dated April 21, 2026 set new monthly prices for France. These figures are specific to that market and should not be applied to other regions.

Call of Duty releases

The same April 2026 announcement said future Call of Duty releases would no longer join Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch. They were expected to arrive around the following holiday season. Titles already in the catalog remain available.

Cloud gaming hour limits from November 2026

On September 3, 2026, Xbox Wire announced monthly cloud gaming allowances that begin in November 2026. The limits are not prices, and they are not the same thing as the 2025 price exception.

Xbox said it expected the change to affect 4% of Game Pass subscribers. That is Xbox’s own estimate, published in the September 2026 announcement. As of this writing, the limits have not yet taken effect, and Xbox may update the terms before or after they start.
