League of Legends usually fails to download or install for one of two reasons that Riot Games itself names: the account running the installer lacks administrator access, or something is interfering with the network connection. Riot’s support article “Can’t install League of Legends,” dated May 31, 2026, states that the installation “may fail if you don’t have administrator access to your computer, or if something is interfering with your network connection.” That is the starting point, but it does not tell you which problem you have. The title question covers several different failures, and the right fix depends on where the process stops, what platform you are on, and whether any error text appears.
First, identify where the download stops
“Not downloading” can mean three different things. Sorting your situation into one of these stages narrows the fix considerably.

Fixing a failed installation on Windows
Riot’s guidance for Windows installation failures is short, and the steps below follow its order. Work through them in sequence and stop when the installation succeeds.
- Open Windows Update and install any pending updates, then restart the computer. Riot recommends checking for Windows updates before anything else.
- Confirm the installer came from the official League of Legends website. A file from another source can fail or be blocked for reasons unrelated to the game.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as Administrator. This addresses the first cause Riot names, missing administrator access.
- If the installer still fails, check whether a firewall is interfering. Riot’s article raises firewall interference as a possible cause. If you test by turning the firewall off, treat that as a temporary diagnostic only. Turn protection back on as soon as the test is finished, whether or not it changed the result.
- Retry the installation. If it fails again, move on to the patcher and support steps below and keep any error text or code you saw.
When the client is stuck patching
If League is already installed and the update will not finish, the patcher may be the problem. Riot’s article “Installing the updated League client,” dated April 21, 2024, says that an older patcher can fail to migrate to the updated client and gives platform-specific steps to launch it from your existing League installation. Because that article is more than two years old, treat the interface details as Riot’s published instructions at that date rather than a guarantee for every current build.

Windows
Open the League of Legends installation folder. The default location Riot names is C:Riot GamesLeague of Legends. Launch lol.launcher from that folder so the patcher runs and can migrate to the updated client. Then let the update finish before closing it.
Mac
Open the League application package from its original location, then launch “Play League of Legends.” Let the patcher complete the update before you quit.

Network interference and DNS changes
If the installer or patcher fails with connection problems, Riot’s article “Increasing connection quality through public DNS servers,” dated May 15, 2026, describes switching to public DNS as a way to improve connection quality. Riot lists Google and Cloudflare public DNS and gives setup steps for Windows 11 and Mac. This is a connection-quality measure, not a confirmed fix for download failures, and it is not a first-line step. Riot also warns that some internet providers block third-party DNS. If you lose internet access after changing DNS, revert to your previous settings.
When to contact Riot Support and what to send
If the failure is still unexplained after the steps above, Riot’s “Updated Client Patcher Issue” article, dated September 4, 2025, directs you to submit a ticket under technical issues and attach your League client logs. Include the error text or code, your platform, and the stage where the process stopped. The log folder location depends on your platform.

The Windows path assumes the default install location. If you installed League somewhere else, look for the same LogsLeagueClient Logs folder inside your chosen directory.
What none of this requires
Riot’s guidance for this problem involves permissions, Windows updates, the patcher, network settings, and support escalation. It does not call for buying hardware or replacing equipment, and no such purchase is needed to work through these steps.

- Windows installation failures: Windows Update, official installer, Run as Administrator, then firewall check as a temporary test.
- Stuck patching: confirm the patcher is the cause, launch it from the existing installation, and let it finish.
- Connection trouble: consider public DNS only after the simpler steps, and revert if internet access is lost.
- Unexplained errors: submit a Riot Support ticket with the correct client logs attached.
