In March 2023, former Dragon Age executive producer Mark Darrah returned to BioWare as a consultant, while most of the team working on the next Mass Effect was assigned to help complete Dragon Age: Dreadwolf. A smaller group led by Mike Gamble stayed in pre-production on Mass Effect. The staffing shift was reported at the time as cross-project support—not proof that Dreadwolf was about to be cancelled. The game was later renamed Dragon Age: The Veilguard and released in 2024.
What happened in March 2023?
BioWare brought Mark Darrah back as a consultant on Dreadwolf and shifted most of the developers working on the next Mass Effect to assist with the Dragon Age game. A smaller core group, led by Mike Gamble, continued pre-production on Mass Effect. VGC’s contemporaneous report attributed the staffing details to EA and VentureBeat; it was not a direct statement from EA reproduced in the available record. VGC’s March 2023 report.
“Rally to finish” captures the urgency of the reported support, but it should not be read as evidence that the game was in danger of cancellation. The reporting describes a temporary allocation of development help and a consultant’s return, not a rescue from a confirmed production crisis.
What happened after the team shift?
| Date | What BioWare or EA said or did |
|---|---|
| August 23, 2023 | BioWare said it was eliminating approximately 50 roles while moving to a more focused model. General manager Gary McKay said Dreadwolf remained an immediate priority and that a core veteran team led by Mike Gamble continued pre-production on the next Mass Effect. The figure was BioWare’s reported reduction, not an independently verified count. BioWare’s update. |
| June 6, 2024 | BioWare announced that Dragon Age: Dreadwolf would be titled Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The studio said the companions, rather than the Dread Wolf as an enemy, were at the heart of the game. The title announcement. |
| October 31, 2024 | EA released The Veilguard for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. EA’s launch announcement. |
| January 29, 2025 | BioWare said a core team led by veterans of the original Mass Effect trilogy was developing the next Mass Effect. The studio said it did not need the full staff for that stage and had worked to match colleagues with other EA teams. BioWare’s update. |
Did Mark Darrah return as a full-time executive?
No. The March 2023 reporting described Darrah as a consultant on Dreadwolf. It does not establish that he returned as a full-time executive producer.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does the staffing shift tell us about BioWare now?
It records a specific production decision in March 2023. The later updates show that BioWare continued to describe Dreadwolf as a priority during its August 2023 restructuring, then released the game under its new title in October 2024. In January 2025, the studio described the next Mass Effect as the focus of a core team after The Veilguard shipped.
